Since we are all regularly adding "stuff" to our boats, I wanted to share some "road rash" we've just learned about. When you have stainless steel hardware there is a inherent possibility for the threads to "gall" or weld up and lock together. Fellow gearheads can learn more at http://www.atlanticfasteners.com/technical/tips_020.html

BOTTOM LINE: Buy some thread lubricant / anti-seize at your local auto, marine or home improvement store and use it on any stainless hardware you install on your boat. Put a coating on the threads and it will prevent potential problems. It was always something I used growing up around saltwater so we could get the bolts back off after a few years but it turns out preventing locking of stainless hardware is an equally important use.

We just bought a bunch of small packages to include in our hardware kits and send me a private post with your mailing address if you want me to mail you one for your boatbox.

Bill

PS: Never-Seez is just one brand, Loctite and Permatex and a bunch of other companies make equivilent products.

i would not advise using never seez as it contains nickel and actually promotes rust when put in a marine enviroment. there are other anti seize lubricants that work better.
