Yes, more talk about speakers.. more and more options out there...

With all this talk about horn loaded tweeters and dB sensitivity levels.. I've been paying more attention to em.. I would love a pair of the NVS speakers but I want 4 of whatever I put up there and I just can't bring myself to spend $2000 on freekin speakers.. nonono... so... here are the final contenders. Keep in mind these will be hooked up in parallel on a 2 ohm load to 2 channels of a Clarion 700w 4 channel amp..

6x9 Infinity's...
$319.00/pair

6.5" Audiobahns with horn loaded drivers and 95dB sensitivity!
$299.00/pair

All of the above in sweeeeeeeet ass fiberglass enclosures.. big ups on the sex appeal..

8" Bazooka 2-way tubbies..
$249.00/pair (with clamps)

Input? I need to buy a set this week.. its been 80deg here in Orlando too often and its tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiime Twisted Evil

Thanks in advance...

There is a bit more to consider then just sensitivity. Just because a speaker is more sensitive, doesn't make it louder for a paticular application.

Industry sensitivty is given at 1watt @ 1 meter @ 8ohm.

So if a speaker is rated at 100db sensitivty it will put out close to 100db measure at 1 meter away. Now remember the above standard is measured at 8ohm, make sure you are comparing 4ohm speakers to 4ohm speakers. Otherwise subtract 3db from 4ohm measurement when comparing 4:8.

Now 3db represents double the volume. And it takes double the power to get that 3db.

My point in all this is this:

Speaker A (100db sens / 50w RMS)
Speaker B ( 97db sens/ 150w RMS)

Watts db(A) db(B)

1 100 97
2 103 100
4 106 103
8 109 106
16 112 109
32 115 112
64* 118* 118
128 121

So you can see that Speaker B is louder as it can achieve over 121db, where as speaker A was being cooked at 118. Speaker B is twice as loud as speaker A. Now if we drive both with 50w RMS then yes speaker A is louder.

Don't get me wrong, having been a Klipsch fan for life I love horns. But there is WAY more to how loud something is then just Sens.

How loud will it be at the wakeboarder? You want at least 10db above the background noise, and figure about 80-90db. Assume 80ft (24.3m) from tower to rider, you will loose about 27.7db from distance alone. So to hit 80db at the rider you need 108db at the speaker. (-6db for ever double of distance).

So consider power AND sensitivity. As a slightly larger amp tends to be cheaper then very sensitive horn speakers. This is for one speaker (or coax pair) add +3db for each additional speaker driven in the above example.

Here is a quick example of my system:

2 pairs Poly MMC650. Driven at 80W RMS I should expect around 90db at 75 feet.
That's $340 for the speakers, and $345 for the JL e4300M amp. So for less than $800 assuming you do the DIY speaker cans.

3 pairs = 96db

After much deliberating I went with the Audio Formz enclosed Infinity 6x9's.. we will see how they handle everything.. I'll be sure to post pics with a review as soon as possible!!

Not bad for 4 beautiful enclosures for $650 w/shipping included..

Tell me that isn't slick as hell...

P.S. This is totally unsolicited and no.. I have no interest in the company.. just a dope ass setup for the summer Twisted Evil

Those pics are actually off of the website..

I got my speakers QUICK and wow.. I have to say that in person they are pretty impressive.. and huge! I didn't realize how big the enclosures are.. like oblong and at least 14" or so in length if not more.. I'll have to measure..

I had to send the clamps back also because I switched towers to a full custom 2" from a cheap 2.5" ebay special, and they were super nice and mailed me new clamps without even getting my old ones back from me yet..

..so in the process I had to take apart the enclosure to get the old ones off and WOW.. complete polyester baffling inside with Dynamat and all! SUPER quality.. I personally cannot believe that they are only charging $320/pair.. thats a STEAL...

Custom tower goes up this week, stereo install this weekend, pics by next week complete with full evaluation..

So far for the money these seem to be far and wide the best option out.

i got mine last friday and had car toys install them along with some other upgrades. picked it up last saturday and it rocks!

really happy with the audioformz. they have a new polk momo mmc650 6.5" round that's not listed on their site yet that's what i got. i'm really happy. they're also going to have speaker covers in the next couple weeks. ronnie was super cool and took care of me. was even able to get them out fast to make my install date.

check it out!
