I have an 1994 Prostar 205, and for some reason the speedometers dont read the speed correctly and sometimes they cut out. I was wondering if anyone know these old speedometers work or if there was somewhere online that could explain how to clean them out. I feel like a simple cleaning at the tips (the part that sits in the water would improve the situation).

any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks
alex

You can remove your dash and use an air compressor to blow out the air guide tube. Just remove the tube from the back of the speedo. Remember when you blow out the tube starting at the speedo to detach it at the pickup too. You should also detach the tube on the back from the pickup on the back of the boat and blow out the assembly. They also make a tool to clean the assembly out. Sometimes debris gets lodged in there or muck just builds up and you cannot blow it out. I try to clean mine every couple of months, but sometimes mine go out too (I have a 93 205). I friend of mine picked up some new original AirGuide pickups from a guy on correctcraftfan.com for $55. It made an incredible difference in the speedo reading on his 89 2001.

Is is really necessary to disconect the speedos at the dash, or can i just used the compressed air from the back peices or does that defeat the purpose since the gunk wont go anywhere?

You got it man. You don't want that crap in your speedo or pushed further up the tube. It is real easy to take the guage cluster out. If I recall there are only 6 or 8 phillip screws that hold it in place. While you are in there. check the small screws that secure the speedo backing plate (3 very small phillip screws per speedo). I had two loose on one speedo that was effecting the reading. Take your time with the guage cluster screws. The anchors are set in the fiberglass backing on the dash. You can break them loose if you twist too hard. Just take your time.

Yea i know what you mean about breaking the cluster, but im pretty sure we took out the dash last season and put in a new cig lighter connection so hopefully the screws havent rusted in place yet. Can i just use a can of compressed air like the ones to clean off computer keyboards?
Also i need to un screw the back things that sit in the water right? Will i see stuff coming out if there is gunk backed up?

A can of compressed air won't do it. You need to use an air compressor. You do not have to remove the pigot assemblies from the boat. Only the tubes from the assemblies. You can use the compressor to blowout the assembly also. Cut a small piece of tubing and attach it to the assembly then blow it out with the compressor.

A compressor may or may not be necessary. I've cleared them out by blowing them with whatever air was in my lungs. Depends how much crud, how old, etc....
