Anybody own a Honda Pilot and use it to tow a boat? I don't tow more than about 30 minutes and there are no hills. Maybe once a year I go over the pass and that may cause some lug on the engine but I'm not too worried. I'm pulling a 3500lb mastercraft.
Any info would be appreciated. |

| I don't own one, but I'd strongly caution you against it. The curb weight is just over 4000 pounds. Your boat damn near outweighs the vehicle, which means that stopping, expecially under heavy braking, will be a real issue. |

Swass, hopefully he has trailer brakes....
swilly, I thought the Pilot had a 5000lb rating if it is properly equipped and the trailer has brakes.
That said, I wouldn't want to use it for any long hauls over 30min. _________________

Its rated to pull a 4500lb boat, or a 3500lb trailer. The boat is aerodynamic and so it can pull a little larger boat. My 4runner had less HP/TQ and pulled it just fine, but it was RWD. The Pilot is FWD with AWD auto control, never getting more than about 35-40% to the rear wheels.
Thanks Naw, Anybody else have some input? |

swilly, Your 4Runner was also a frame construction instead of a uni-body. _________________ Steal My Book

What does that mean? Can you explain more? The Pilot has a larger towing rating than the 4-Runner. Is the Pilot going to pull a little better? |

Manufacturer's don't rate towing capacity on aerodynamics. Check the owner's manual and see what it says. If it says it can handle the boat (plus trailer weight) with the included hitch, you'll be fine. If not, and you push it, plan on suspension problems, transmission problems, and braking problems. |

Actually, the manufacturer does rate the pulling capacity on aerodynamics. Those two 4500/3500lb numbers are direct from Honda! The tow package comes with a transmission cooler and power steering cooler as well! I will only have the rig for 12 months, and I don't pull more than 30 mins away normally, but I just don't want to get stuck with a rig that I'll be dumping money into as a result of pulling my boat. |

Is this comment from experience or just an opinion based off specs? |

swilly, You should be fine with your Pilot. I wouldn't hesitate to use it based on what you have said. _________________ Steal My Book

I stand corrected!
If Honda says it's capable of towing 4500, it is. I wouldn't worry about it. It won't be as good of a tow vehicle as a full size truck, but it should do the job without drama. |

| I have a 2005 Pilot with the tow package and tow a 2004 Mobius LS without a problem. I believe the boat is 3,100 lbs. Also you need not be concerned about towing less than 30 mins. |

swilly,
I don't care what a "manufacturers" tow ratings state. I have no idea how they arrive at the figures--often times I think they rate being able to move a load down a 15% grade.
My Yukon XL with the tow package is rated at 8,000 lbs (I think) but it can barely pull itself up a hill--let alone a 3,500 pound boat.
I personally would buy an old 2 wheel drive 3/4 ton truck and toss in a stereo before I'd spend a lot of money on a car that will soon be torn up. _________________ I hope the weather is calm as you sail up your heavenly stream |

I was only doing it to help out my dad, he had 1 year left on the lease and he uses a ton of miles. He is allowed 36,000 miles for the 3 year lease and he's at 35,000 with one more year left. I use about half the miles he does. He will probably pay $3500 in miles when the lease is up if he decides not to buy it.
I know the Pilot isn't designed for towing but was more of a temporary solution.
The F-150 I have rocks, It pulls like a big dog, I love it! |
