|
|
| I recently bought a 16' 1988 Invader OB and want to get a pylon because I don't want to drop a grand on a tower. I'm a little worried about the torque that the straps will put on a fiberglass hull that I'm not 100% sure about. Has anyone ever had any problems with this? Am I worring too much? |

Hey burntorange77,
You MAY be worrying too much...keep in mind, some of the flex (give) encountered in these home-made pylons is in the straps themselves. On my old boat I used almost ALL cable (except at the bow, I had about 3 feet of strap)...there was almost no flex in my system. I could crank it down VERY tight as both of my rear cables were, well... cables with NO give. You can check out my profile, I still have some pics there and Bill (of Monster Tower fame) has kindly placed my "how to" article on his diytower.com website.
My rig cost under $100.

| wesgardner, I have been wanting to install a pole in my boat for a while, but I haven't done it because the gas tank sits under the spot where I would have to mount my base. In your pictures it looks like that piece of plywood just lays on the floor, if that is the case, does that stay in place? Do you have anymore pictures of that? |

Hey johnnyringo2418,
Yup, it just sits there...if you analyze the load path, you'll find the load on the pole is STRAIGHT down...once you've tentioned your wire rope "stays", believe me, the thing won't move....
Sorry, no more pics, I don't have that boat any longer but if you want any more suggests/moral support, feel free to PM or e-mail me...my pole worked great and was quite safe...
