Older inboard shopping.

Well, today my dad said we are goin to be selling our outboard. He didn't mention buying another boat which is probably because he doesn't want to. But I REALLY don't want to end it at that. I am pretty sure we can get 7 or 8 thousand for the outboard boat. So now that brings me to my next question. Whats a good inboard for under 7k. I don't want to get a SN 2001 mainly because they run for about 10k. I like the stars and stripes alot. I don't know what to look for from the other brands. I just hope we can get another boat. This is gonna suck bigtime if we dont.

New interior would run +/-$1k. I can't believe he still has it for that price.

If you/your dad are willing to drive a little ways you can easily find a nice SN2001 for $7-9k. You can always have a dealer check it out for ~$100.

Gonna be tough to find any decent inboard under $7k. You can check in to early supra sunsports too, but again.....$7k is pretty tight budget.

Thanks for the link. I am going to be keeping an eye out on the forums, and on boat trader and other internet sites. Thanks for the tips. I am not 100% sure we will replace the boat, but all I can do is hope for the best. The amount we can spend depends on the amount we sale the other boat for. It might frop down to 5 or 6 thousand.

There are alot more. I just bought a 1985 sunsport for 5,600 with my brother. It is in great shape new interior low hours. There are lots of deals under 7k you just might have to drive a little to find them. Mine is in my profile if your wondering.

I got a great '85 SN2001 for 4,000. Look around, you'll find a good deal.

The Ski Nautique 2001 should not be 10k. Arrgh. People that sell them for that price piss me off. My whole love for those things is centered around the concept that you don't need to go broke to get into the sport. If you shop around and aren't in a huuuuuge hurry, you should be able to find one for considerably less. I sold mine for a lot less than 10k.

Hunt around on iboats, boattrader and even the occasional google search. There is also eBay. Flipsell sellers are typically out of their gord so I avoid that site, personally. I would also avoid the Stars & Stripes and Malibu Skiers, for use as a wakeboard boat. At your price range, I would seriously consider the Ski Nautique 2001.

teh SN2001 is a good boat, but small, there is also the Supra Sunsport, which is the same hull iirc as the current launch, we have a Correct Craft Martinique, and it is a big boat and throws a decent wake, there are alot of good options out there, just go test drive/ride them, and do some research about who has them and what they like/dislike about them.

I am a big fan of the Sunsport too but I believe that will fall outside of the budget mentioned. I have never been behind the Martinique so I can not comment on that.

Ok, well after talking tonight, it doesn't look like we are getting anything. I guess you will see me bummbing rides off people this summer.. This sucks..

Thanks for the help guys, if we get anything it will be under 6000 and I will let you know what choice we make.

That sucks, it will be hard getting anything that doesnt need a ton of work for less then 6 but it could happen. Get a seadoo and a wakeskate.

I have one more serious question. What motor issues are there to look for in the older inboards? When should i say "wait this is too old"?

Major issues are leaks in gaskets that allow oil and water to mix. That will be costly. Have the compression of all 8 cylinders checked. They should be pretty close, I don't remember the acceptable percentage of difference offhand.

Most other things are independant of the motor. Things you can expect to have to replace on an older boat include the belts, starter, fuel pump, alternator, things like that. But they are generally not horrible. I would say the big things to make sure are OK are that the block is not cracked, that the exhaust manifolds are not cracked, and that any gaskets that seperate water from oil are intact and working. If you check the oil and it looks milky or there's water in there, that's a really bad sign.
