Anyone hear of the West Nile Virus being at your lake/river this year? I heard on the news last week that our lake is going to be home to the West Nile Virus. And there trying to control it. Which is good and bad. The good part is now not as many people will be going out to the lake (meaning no rollers, less pwc, and glassy water). The bad part is that if your scared of it, you can die and the pesticide they spraying right now to try and get rid of it.

Chances are you will get WNV, and not even know it, if you are in any kind of shape decent enough to ride a wakeboard. I think the pesticides might be worse than the disease itself.

At least that's what the Monroe County Health Department (NY state) had to say last year. Mostly newborns and the elderly and people with immuno-deficiencies get sick and/or die.

I wouldn't sweat it. Unless you are old or a horse. 'cause it killed a whole bunch of horses before they had an equine vaccine.

But the media F'ing LOVES WNV. Cool Mid-east name, travels with Crows (oh, black crows, symbol of EVIL woooooo!!......) and it can be tracked across states, so there can always be something to say about it.

Maybe we should start a poll: Which is more hyped up, and which are you more scared of: SARS, West Nile Virus, or Gettign Run Over by your Driver. I'm more scared of the latter.

I don't even think it got out here last year. If it was here it didn't stop me from riding.

Stan: Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!

Cartman: Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha! Jesus-Tap-Dancing-Christ! Get with the program, pal!

Stan: Yeah, nobody gets West Nile Virus anymore! Now, it's all about the S.A.R.S!

Kyle: S.A.R.S?!

West Nile is expected to make it to the west coast this year.... there was a single incident last year in Los Angeles. But I never saw the follow up.

yeah, it can swell your brain. And if you've seen TV shows where the brain swells, it makes the body do some really neat things, like have no nerve control, become a veggie, no vision and obviously death.

Here's the deal. You can only get WNV from a mosquito that has bitten an infected bird. So right there your chances are pretty low. If you notice that a bite is larger and more red than normal, get to the hospital. If you start to have severe headaches, and your eyes become sensitive to the light (sign of brain swell) then get to the hospital.

We got it here (Ontario Canada) 2 years ago from Michigan and New York. Best thing to do to prevent is to stay in when they are most active (early morn and late evening), wear light colored clothes, long sleeves and pants, and drain anything that may collect water (bird baths and so on) as this is wear they breed. Wear mosquito repellent with DEET which will help.

Riding is no prob because they can't land on the water well, and can't fly very far. A mosquito will live and die something like 100 meters from it's birthplace (maybe less). I've been bitten last summer and never gave any thought to it. The chance of you getting it is slim, but getting medical attention quickly is the key.

Is it retarded that I know this stuff?

This is all true, I read a flyer put out by the gov, yesterday in an effort to rid the country of it.
