|
|
My wife and I, along with our new baby, just moved. I've moved a lot in my adult life but this was the first move since being married a few years ago. In my previous moves, as I unpacked I would reflect on the potential value of individual items during a Red Dawn Scenario. Specifically, would I need this particular thing if Red Dawn went down tomorrow? In all my previous moves I'd say I've been around 40% Red Dawn compliant. During this move, as I unpacked box after box after box labelled "decor" and "crystal" I realized that I am at best only 2-3% Red Dawn compliant. I sadly realized that the vast majority of stuff I own doesn't do anything except require packing, unpacking, and a place on a shelf to wait to get dusted. More sad are these two facts: it will only get worse and I am helpless to stop it. _________________

I'd be ready for a red dawn easily, but I'd say the majority of stuff I own as well isnt red dawn compliant. Living in the area I do, it would be easy to survive in the same way. I dont have a water filter which would come in handy, but if the mountain water went bad I've got a cave with a waterfall in it here. The earth acts like a filter.
Hey, if I had time and room to pack it up, I could also have electricity.

You've never heard of Red Dawn?!?
It's a classic survival/soviet invasion/teenage brotherhood movie circa 1983 -- go to the store NOW and rent it! Definitely a dude movie but I liked it, too. Let us know what your review is. |

My red dawn ratio was pretty low, but I just bought a Bazooka, which brought it up to around 47.98%.

Red Dawn is classic as it gets. Great movie.
Unfortunately, I'm no where near compliant. _________________ www.MidwestMilitia.net |

Save your pee for the inevitable hole in the radiator... that will earn you a couple of compliance points.
After my brother and I saw that movie, we made all kinds of plans. He is gonna crack up when I tell him about this thread. |

Just make sure you don't pee in the windshield wiper fluid...that's just wrong. Being able to pee in the radiator is key. I'm going to practice that today. _________________

scott a, you are not allowed back into WB.com until you have watched that movie!!!
Well I am from the south so guess what my ratio is????
I would say around 95%.
-I have a camping pack that has my tent, sleeping bag, water filters, pots pans, fire starting equipment (flints, matches, lighters) stove for boiling water.
-Medical pack with basic things, plus a snakebite kit, epi-pen for bee stings or scorpions.
-Flash lights, and of course clothing, primarily cold weather clothing. Waterproof boots
-Climbing gear, rope, harness, beaners, etc.
-Rifle. A 30-06 hunting rifle with scope for deer, or invading russians.
-9mm Berretta, and 357 S&W
-300 Rifle rounds, so if you're not shooting russians you're good for a long time
-100 9mm and 100 357 rounds.
-A truck with fully equipped tool box, and I mean fully equipped.
-A major off-roading jeep, can go anywhere, especially places military vehicles can't. Has onboard air compressor for air tools. That's right, I even have an air powered saw for fire wood. Spare gas cans on board, to compliment the custom 20 gallon tank. Hi-lift jack for any tricky situations. All it needs is a winch and it's ready to go.
So it looks like I am ready for war kids. Good luck finding me. I am only 95% because I don't have condoms in my pack right now for all the lovely ladies left running into the woods. Wait a minute, why would I need them??? I might have to repopulate the country!!! Ah yes, I can see it now hundreds of little Haugy's running around............. |

Accuracy is key. The radiator will probably be hot when you pee it full, so you have to maintain a good distance between the dispenser and the receptacle.
You cannot lead a successful resistance movement with steam burns on your wang. |

I suppose after looking at Haugy's list, I may be more prepared than I thought. Actually, I just have access to alot of guns...maybe I'm more prepared for prehistoric worms invading my basement like in Tremors than invading Russians. _________________ www.MidwestMilitia.net |

Actually, all of this preparedness means nothing if you do not carry it with you at all times, or have it stored out in the woods. Having the gear at home means nothing if you cannot get to it.
You have to be able to flee from ANY location straight into the wilderness, without stopping at home first. That is true Red Dawn preparedness. Hoarding gear at your house does not count.
What are you gonna do, drive up to the russians on your block and say "excuse me, can I go into my house and get the gear I have stored in the basement to start a resistance movement against your takeover?" |

goinbig143, True, but in the movie version. They stop by a Hunting & Camping supply store!!!! Man if that's not cheating. Hell I have that stuff at home ready to go.
All they had to start off with was the truck and a pistol. That's it. I agree it does me no good if I can't get to it. That's why I am happy I have learned how to camp and survive for short periods of time with out those necessaties. Then I'll just go find or steal what I need. Survival of the fittest beotch!! Or the one with the better guns. |

I have all the required camping gear, but my arsenal is limited to a Ruger 10/22, which would make my ability to take down big game or a Cuban militant difficult at best. My ammunition is also sparse. Maybe I could secure a good AK after I bag my first ruskie.
I have my truck, so I would be good there. Then again, I don’t have a cool roll cage in the back…..so I may want to consider putting one in.
I also have a Murray High circa 1988 letterman’s jacket stored next to my wife’s wedding dress…..so I am good there as well.
All said, being that I have a 11 month old child and a 9 year old... I expect to be housed in the encampment at the football field and tortured, while the wife and kids live at home and talk in hushed voices. |

You know, although it's a fictional situation, could you imagine if something like that were to happen (or when it happens). What would or could you do?
I know my wife and I could survive and be on the run for a long time. Physically fit, no kids, plenty of supplies, etc... but what about parents? Do you stay with them and try to protect them even though they aren't as mobile. I mean my mom has two fake knees, she ain't runnin' through wilderness blasting Russians/Cubans/Osama's. Do you say your goodbye's and jet? Or camp out at there house where the artillery is and blast people from the windows? hmmm... _________________ www.MidwestMilitia.net |

I'm pretty set I think.
Got my trusty 870 with about 1000 rounds of slugs and 00.
The .270 with about 200 rounds for some big takedowns.
My Jeep should get me far enough out till I run out of gas.
Essential camping supplies and good sleeping bags.
I think I still have a 1/2 case of MRE's as well, enough to get started. _________________

As for my Red Dawn ratio, I am happily at 0.00001% ready to roll. Bring it on you dirty commies! _________________

NAW, I know. I am in the same boat. No kids, just me.
As for my family. My father and I are really like brothers. He would want me to go get my sister (29) and take care of her. Then head out. He would stay and defend my mother to the death. He loves nothing more than his family and would do anything to protect them. He's an ex army helo pilot, and has been downed behind enemy lines. He knows what to do.
So I would protect the future generation. He would protect the current. If I protested and wanted to stay and help. He'd probably knock me on the ground with his fists. It's tough, but sometimes it's what has to be done.
dirtysparks, no doubt man!!! Watch out for those Resi Evil type scenarios!

haugy,
Its from growing up in the mountains in the Pac NW. I look at the city people here and they would be smoked within an hour or two.
You can have all the survival stuff in the world but if you don't have the skills, in the long run you are S.O.L. _________________

Even with a kid, I'd say I'm pretty compliant. I have a garage and a closet full of gear that I could survive on for quite some time. I even have several MRE's we could survive on for a couple weeks. I have purification tablets, light weight tents, bags, climbing gear, etc. I need a gun though so I can raise my ratio over 50%.
What would a compliant ratio be? 35%? 50% 75% _________________ (insert funny chit here) |

joedirt00, yep. Even in the movie, the stuff they took with them didn't last long. the key is being resourceful and skillful. Damn commies.
WOLVERINES!
oshensurfer, I don't know how to define compliant. I have plenty of survival stuff and decent knowledge, but I noticed that only a small percentage of my belongings would be helpful in a situation like that. It would probably be better to define compliance as how confident you are that you could evade and establish a sustainable harassment in whatever environment you live. Plus, your highschool mascot cannot be lame.
oh, and WOLVERINES!!!! _________________

haugy, unless you were in the desert.
I'm actually very confident, though my main worries if something like that were to happen would be the locals. I'd be afraid of getting shot by one of the other rednecks hiding out in the woods. Either mistakingly or to take our stuff.
My family would be fine, except for my mom. She's not exactly the "wilderly" type. _________________
