I'm in the market for a new boat. I've always loved SAN, but I honestly need more room for the wife, my two F#@K tropheys, and the weekend party crew when I'm not riding. I've been REALLY looking into Malibu's 247 for it's size and clean looking interior. I love to wakeboard and I'm getting into surfing. With the wedge and stock ballast is the Hammerhead going to be enough or should I eat the $3500 and get the 8100 motor?????
ALSO I hate the fact that I only ONE dealer to buy from!!! On my boat I'd get power wedge, bow ballast, racks, extended bimini, heater, shower, carpet saver, no stereo, maybe 8100??? Anyone got a rough idea of what it should cost????

dave2030,
I am looking at that same boat as well and I am thinking that $3500 for an extra 50 horses is not worth it for me. I guess it depends on how big your weekend crew is. Ours varies but is usually 8 - 10 people and I think that 400 ponies is enough for that..
I am not positive but I would guess you would be in the low to mid 60k range for that boat.

ok guys the thing you have to understand about the boat engines is the horepower is only 50 horses different but the torque is like 120. I live in Salt Lake City and we own a 23 lsv with the 8.1. Here are some things I have noticed personally. The 8.1 doesn't eat much more gas than our old vlx with the corvette in it. I belive it has to do with the fact that you don't have it floored as much and lower running rpms.

We run the boat at about 6000 feet above sea level and I wouldn't say that it is overpowered at that elevation. with all the fat sacks full and the wedge down it takes prolly 10 seconds to get to 22. Pulls you out of the whole great if you ever ski. tops out at 48 or so.

I have not been in a 23 with the hammerhead or monsoon so I can't compare that way. Up here the malibu dealer only sells his with the 8.1 and I have talked to people in other area's who never sell them with it so ????.

The newer version of the 8.1 you would be getting works better than the version I have. The new throttle system works lots better.

just our .02

our 23 lsv is a little smaller but gets out of the hole just fine with 6 people and 1000 lbs of ballast with only the 350 monsoon. Im sure either engine will be fine for you guys. I think the most ive had is 12 adults in the boat and it planed just fine. Wake was schweet too.

JOE NAVY, have YOU priced one out yet in your area??? Are you looking for most of the same options that I have listed??? Everywhere I've called or had family check on in other states say "well pretty close to MSRP. " Dunno why my rep is $15k more!

One more thing of note.

The difference in the monsoon vs hammerhead is 60 hp however the touque difference is only 20. I doubt you notice much difference in the engines at all. and if you do its not gonna be on the hole shot and thats all that matters IMHO. We had the vlx with the corvette like I said before and the hole shot was not better than the monsoon. I was pissed cause you would think it would have been much better with all that horsepower but I think its cause the touque isn't significantly higher. I feel we waisted our money on that.we did get
another 4 mph on the top end though. I have heard the hammerheads are glitchy. at least that is what my dealer is sayin. Malibu used to post the torque #'s on thier website but the 06 one don't have them anymore probably for the reason I stated. So I would go 8.1 or monsoon if it was my decision. I think the hammer is a wast of money.

Thanks Hyrific, it's a 25% increase in torque from the hammerhead to the 8.1L. the Monsoon you can't get in the 247 I believe.

dave2030,
I am looking at the same list of options you are plus the nice stereo package with transom remote and subs etc. My wife wants the one trimmed out in pink which I am fine with but the price with everything and the colormatched trailer is coming to right at 68K...
I haven't made a deal yet as I still am saving some money up but that is the price I am looking at.

Joe

Yeah thats pretty close to most of the out of state quotes where my family lives. My guy is more than a few thousand more than that. Is that a out the door price?? Tax??? I'd get a transom remote too. That one in the middle of the seat is kinda dumb. I want to change the music from the driver seat or off the back of the boat not have a friend change my favorite song while I'm driving.

dave2030,
that was not an out of the door price so taxes would still go in on top of that.

I am holding off for now since I am transferring this time next year. I want to keep expenses down until we get settled. I will keep running my I/O Chris craft for the next season.
I hope you find a good deal man!!
Joe

Email me: I have the low-down on both engines in detail.
Hammerhead-idles hard-good horsepower and low-end torque. It will move this boat, unless you load the ballasts most of the time and have more that 4 in your boat.
8.1-uses oil, the torque curve is not that much better and the boat is extremely difficult to prop. It may change from the dealer to where you use it. Be mindful of that. The 8.1 uses 50 gallons/hr. at WOT.
