Everyone tells me I just need to cut as hard as I can into the wake and I will extend automatically. Well when I cut really hard all I do is a big jump into the flats. What is the key element to this trick?

You have to stand up at the top of the wake and let the rope pull you forward which will let your feet come up and behind you. Basically cut hard into the wake like your doing now and instead of keeping the edge all the way through, begin to stand up and don't fight the tension of the boat which you would do to stay on axis. Allow the boat to pull you forward.

comsidering the raley is a line tension based trick. this is not a good idea until your board has left the wake. Letting off your edge on raley based maneuvers is what brings out the notorious crashed associated with learning them a.k.a. the hard way. infact, this is why your attempts are unsucceful, because you are not edging thru the wake long enough.

this is the 'key element' you're missing to this trick. your back should be straight and should form an angle with the water when you lean. the key is to always reduce this angle (loading the line) and HOLD IT THRU AND BEYOND the wake. now its really not possible to hold it beyond the wake, but if you hold your lean and of course, the line tension, until you run out of water and your board releases into the air=it will shoot out to the F#@$^n moon and back, hang on tight. after the big jerk (you'll feel it) in toward your waist/knee area to finish the move and keep edging on the landing.
