I've been a Primus fan since about 1992, seen 'em 4 times in concert I think. Claypool is one of my top 3 bass players of all time & undoubtedly the most influential of the 90's.

Primus is considered avant-garde I think. Back when alternative was actually alternative & not mainstream they woulda fallen into this category. Basically it's led by the bass. Very dissonant sounding yet strangely catchy. It's something you'd hafta hear to understand what I'm saying.

I love Primus, and if you haven't heard them you probally are abused. Les Claypool is the best and most original bass player ever. Shake Hands with Beef

Hell yeah! Lately I've been on a Primus binge. I recently took a trip up to SLC, UT - 4 hr drive. I made me a nice Primus disc full of mp3s and rocked all the way up. Very good emotional music and no one tops their originality. Not only with their music, but with their music vids too.

Les is superhuman with the bass.

Watch out for the scissorman!

JJ, the only other band I can think of that has a simliar sound to Primus is Infectious Grooves. It's basically all the singer & former bass player from Suicidal Tendencies with some other guys, but they rock too. Rob Trujillo is one of the most underrated bass players I've ever heard.

I dunno if you've heard of a guy named Victor Wooten, but if you haven't you NEED to give him a listen. Bass Player magazine used to have an annual Reader's Poll award & he won Bass Player of the Year so many times they cancelled the contest.

Sailing the Seas of Cheese and Frizzle Fry, hey do you guys know the name of the side project Les had where the guy was playing a guitar called the MATAHORN. I saw it on a tv special once and the music was awesome but couldn't remeber the name when i went looking for the disc.

When my best friend found out my wife was dating me he asked her " Do you know who Les Claypool is?" she said NO. and he was all like well you better find out! PRIMUS ROCKS!!!!!!

I think the band you're talking about is Oysterhead. That was the guitar player from Phish, right? And the guitar looked like a big elk horn or something?

In my personal opinion, none of Claypool's side projects have been as good as Primus, that's when he & everybody else were dead on. It kinda sucks that they broke up right at a time when Larry was finally getting good at guitar, that guitar solo on Wynona's Big Brown Beaver is actually really good!

Stewart Copeland (The Police) is also the drummer for Oysterhead.

I just got done watching Rising Low-Produced by Mike Gordon (Bassist for PhisH) it's a documentary of the making of the Govt Mule tribute album to the late Allen Woody(Allman Bros. & Govt Mule) It's got the 25 best bassists in the world working on this album (Flea, Les Claypool, Phil Lesh, and the bassists from The Who, Parilment, The Meters, Medinski Martin and Wood, DMB and more. If you're into music, check it out.
