I have the blue deep marine optima battery and just added 3 amps to my boat so I am adding another battery. Would be alright just to use a regular marine battery or should I spend the extra cash and get another optima battery.

i would go with a good marine battery. personally i think the optimas are a bunch of hype becuase you can get just as good of a battery for a lot cheaper and only sacrifice the spiral cells. i think the only advantages to optimas are you can mount them on their side or upside down but how often do you need to do that?

I would go with the optima and maybe a capacitor. I have the optimas and would swear by it, also i think someone posted something about a good exide battery.

Yeah that was me, I left my Exide Marine Battery in my boat through the harshest of MI winter still hooked up and it cranked no problem, without any kind of charging. I was impressed. It has 110 amp hours, twice what Optima's have. It is also maintainance free. It isn't the gell type and you can't mount it upside down though, but I still think it's better.

The advantage to optimas, beside being zero maintenance and you can drain them without hurting them, is the ease at which they recharge. An alternator has to wrk harder and longer to recharge a regular batter. This depletes the voltage that an alternator can aloocate to your amps. IF you are using more than one battery, you should consider an optima, gel cell or something with a real low ESR.
