wake100. I'm a mech design engineer. I was thinking about jumping over to sales. What made you switch? Do you still use your engineering knowledge? How's it different/same, better/worse? _________________ Dan DeLaiarro

Dan...
My background is mechanical engineering and there were a couple of big reasons for the switch. First, I like being in a situation where my pay directly reflects my contributions to the company. Being an engineer, you can design a product or process that saves a company millions but all you might get in return is a pat on the back and a small bonus if your lucky. In addition, my work will directly benefit the performance of our company. The engineering comes in when you see an application that could be a big hit. Having the understanding of what it takes to bring a customized solution into a profitable reality is basically what engineering is, minus the regression analysis and theories of turbulant boundry layers. Most of my friends from college complained about the lack of "actual" engineering in the professional world." I had one friend who is an engineer at NASA and he cant even lift a screwdriver without the union getting pissed off. The very high research driven jobs are rare to find and don't seem to pay a lot. I would rather work with customers to find out their needs and be the primary leader in the project. I gather the info, formulat the game plan and then bring those needing to be involved into the mix. The small details are taken care of by the engineers but Im in charge of making the project successful. In short, more pay, more flexibility and Im in control of making it happen..... Hope this helps.
