so last year bought a new boat, nothing special, just a little i/o (first boat)
loving it
i dumped some money into, put a monster tower on it, added a new mp3 head unit with rca aux in, put a custom 10" JL sub up front, etc. i kept the stock jbl 5.25"ers that came with the boat because of $ and all the other toys i had to buy for my new boat. so now that summers over and the boats away ( )i'm saving up for an upgrade for next year and want some advice.
so here's the deal. we're totally new to wakeboarding, so really the last thing we need is speakers we can hear 75' back while riding. here are my challenges though. the boat is pretty small, only 18' and there's really not much room. i can have a car shop cut out the holes where the current jbl's are at and get some 6" speaks in there which is what i'm planning, (was thinking the poke momo's) but i'm afraid that may not make me happy. you see the sound is GREAT at the rear of the boat where these are at, but the soundstage is really pretty much just in the rear. if you turn it up so you can really hear it good up front, then the people in the back can't really talk. unfortunately, the way my boat is designed, there's really no good place to put any small mids or dual cone speakers. so i'm rethinking tower speakers again. i'm really hesitant for a couple reasons:
1. do they really sound all that good IN the boat? at lower volumes?
2. would i be better off trying to find a spot for a couple smaller speakers closer to the front?
3. am i just sh _ t out of luck? buy a bigger boat dumb_ss
i've also looked closely at that infinity 6100m setup that has the amp, the pa system and the two sets of speakers. it looks good on paper, but when i went to hear them at the local car toys store, i wasn't super impressed. i mean, they sounded okay i suppose, but there wasn't much low end, at least as much as i thought there would be. maybe they'd sound good with my setup, i don't know. but then if i mess with the hole tower speaker thing, i've got to worry about having disconnects near the mount points and stuff because i fold it down for storage and what not. is that a big deal?
can you guys give me some advice? should i just stick another amp in there to drive some new 6" and pair up the 4-channel to the sub for some more thump and forget about it, or should i go with some tower speaks? like i said, i'm not looking to hear it accross the lake, i just want something that sounds great THROUGHOUT the boat and like while swimming and stuff.
please comment, tia |

I would get tower speakers, with an amp.
I replaced my stock interior speakers (6 1/2) with 8", using 2 channels of my amp.
I am going to MAKE tower speakers, going the PVC route (thanks joedirt), with the other 2 channels of my amp.
IF budget is a concern, do a search here on tower speakers.. there are tons of DIY articles on making them, or if you want to buy, there is great advice here as well.
I would definetly go with tower speakers for behind the boat, or you will just end up blasting the people in the boat! _________________ Be an organ donor! My father is alive today because of kind souls that donate life... |
