i have rode with lots and lots of people and 1 group that i ride with tells me that i need to have my bindings out(wide) as far as they will go because it helps you balance better. But then i am told by other people that you need to have them about shoulder with apart. if you have them all the way out your more in a squating position the whole time but maybe thats just b/c im really really short i mean i dont know which do you all think is better.

Hi there wakeboard chick,
You want to be comfortable out there.
I'd suggest jumping from a height (like your boat to the dock) and take note of where your feet land. Your bindings should be placed a similar distance apart. Now, with that said, it works better if you don't know what you're jumping for...often once you know the reason you're jumping it changes where and how your feet land land so try to land as naturally as possible.
Hope that helps!

Theres nothing wrong with maxing out your stance. I know a lot of people that ride that way. Personally I dont, but my stance is still wider than shoulder width. Its all personal preference. Having a wider stance gives you better stability since it lowers your centre of gravity. You will see a lot of really advanced riders with a maxed out stance. Don't base how you ride entirely on what people are telling you, listen to their advice but ride how you feel comfortable. Try one stance and if youre not comfortable try another. It'll come eventually.

Ride whatever is comfortable for you. A wider stance generally lets you be more stable and helps keep your hips up and give you proper body position when riding. Again, whatever works for you though.

The wider the better but that does not mean all the way out is the best. Different boards have different stance widths so riding all the way out on my absolute 141 is wider than on my premier 141 and is way wider than all the way out on a 130ish board. The main determing factor in stance width is height. The taller you are the easier it is to ride a wider stance. I think riding all the way out(if youre tall) or one in(if youre average height) is the best unless the board has a stance that is really ide for your height. if all the way out feels awkward or tweaks your knees go one in.

My stance is wider than my shoulders. Each instep is probably 1.5"-2" outside my shoulders. It just feels comfortable though.

Tell that to my buddy who blew out his knee because he was riding too wide.

General rule of thumb; ride shoulder width or slightly wider. Narrower than this hurts your balance, wider hurts your joints. Above all else make sure you're comfortable. The same goes for binding angles. Ride what feels good, not what looks cool.

What constitutes 'too wide' ... where do you draw the line between wide and too wide??? My point is that some people like riding with a really wide stance, sometimes one thats maxed out, it's just how theyre comfortable ... just because it was too wide for your buddy doesnt mean it is for everyone, and that everyone should ride shoulder width or slightly wider.

And for the record I wrote this ...

particularly because before han*marie edited her post she wrote something to the effect of "you definitely dont want to max out your stance". I just wanted to say that there was nothing wrong with it, if that's how youre comfortable.

Whoa, calm down buddy. That's not what it said when I read this thread. Yes, for some people all the way out is fine. However, there's a reason there are more than one set of inserts on a board.
