Any body on here a marine mechanic? Where did you go to school for it? I am thinking about becomeing a marine mechanic. I have got some info on MMI but I don't really know any other schools. I am a senior this year so I want to get more info on it so I can decide whether to go for it or go to college. Even if I do go to school to become a mechanic I will probably still consider college but will probably go to a 2 year college.

I will probably have some more questions if there is anybody on here.

depends on where you are, its a seasonal job here in nor cal. very very busy in summer, and dead slow in the winter. I went to school as an auto mechanic and then got picked up by a boat shop as an apprentice. most big shops will send you to training if they are certified and can afford it.

I think their are some tech schools in Florida that specialise in marine. Youll need to learn all about out drives/outboard motors, fiberglass, plumbing, elec etc.

sanddragon2004, yea MMI is in Orlando. I am wondering if it would be better to go to a automotive school like you did then go through a marine manufacturers training course or do it all at a marine school. I think if I went to a automotive school first then I would be able to get a job in either.

THe benefit for me was since winters suck here for marine mechanics, i was able to get work as an auto mechanic. Which around here paid alot more and was alot more available work. but i would think florida probably has year around work for marine mechanics.

I really enjoyed working on boats just alot less work then when i wrenched on cars.

do lots of research before hand. either way is a good route but might ask around where you intend to work and get mechanics opinions. If you are in cold climate i would start as an auto mechanic.
