|
|
I've been working on the hs backroll for a while and just cant get it... i'm wondering...when i'm cutting in, and my hips are opened up so the board is at a 90 degree angle with the wake, and i am looking over my lead shoulder;;; is there anything else i need to do to initiate the backroll??? or will my opened hips, at a 90 degree angle and my head looking back, do the trick on its own after i pop off the wake???? for instance should i be rolling one way or the other, or doing anything of that nature like a cartwheel or something, or will those three factors alone pop me into a backroll???
thanks guys and gals... |

Try to think about throwing the board up and away from you as you leave the wake. _________________ Does this rag smell like chloroform?

I just registered and this is my first post. I've been trying the backroll all summer and just landed it for the first time yesterday. I was super frustrated as I had come close a number of times. I probably tried 50-60. I tried everything- new non-strech rope, loading the boat with people, etc. My problem was I would land on the board and fall back and skid on my butt. I just couldn't skick a landing. What eventually worked for me is really going big into the wake and really trying to spot the landing over my lead shoulder. But when you commit to throwing it, don't go half way. Go big or go home.
Also, I am on a novice board (Hydroslide- 2 fin). I am getting a 6 fin board and hope that will help me stick more landings. |

Oh dude i have so much trouble with the handle too. The main thing is when you land you need to bend your legs.. My biggest is they're already bent. Get a nice launch and extend those legs son! Look for your landing and BAM you have a tantrum! _________________

yah, i cant even get off the wake right....i think its a mentall block or something, but i always seem to land ackwardly, like on my back, or my side. i dont think i should be worring about the landing yet until i can get the rotation down,,,i would be happy with fully rotating and then sliding on the landing or something,,,thanks for the input all! |

i just got out of the water and this is what i feel happened....i think after i cut into the wake i kinda did a front somersult.. i led the top of my head forward towards the boat...i didnt have the camera with me so i think thats what happened...does this even resemble what a backroll is supposed to be....when someone does a backroll does it feel similar to a front somersult off the wake??? |

Dude. Bully for trying it, but I'm pretty sure what you are describing is a front roll. Think of the backroll like a gainer or reverse off a diving board. Instead of trying to flip into it, throw your feet up and away from you as you drop you back shoulder down into the wake. Check out trick tips-that's what really helped me.

Just got off the water. Awesome morning run with the kids. Only boat out there and glass everywhere. I was trying some fun stuff like a big toe grab HS and a HS surf carve where I felt like I was laying a foot off the water! Really fun.
I feel your pain on landing the invert. Takes some big cahones to even try one. I'm 39 and just started really getting into the sport. This was my second year on a board and first year trying an invert. Lots of crash and burns till I nailed my first one. So far I've stuck only 3 of them. Last night I tried 3 and missed them all-the boat people were telling me I was landing at the wrong angle which makes me think I was taking off at the wrong angle...

Are you using a non stretch rope? I was having the exact same problem and then someone told me I needed a wakeboard rope...
Also, how do you like the Fish board? _________________ Go big or go home. |

I was replying to the guy from venezula. I saw on his profile he ride a Liquid Force Fish and I'm thinking about getting one. Also, my last name is Fish so I can tell people they named a board after me.
My 8 year old son was wakeboarding this morning and threw a big tantrum! I had to give him a big timeout!

What kind of rope are you using? I get some advice from this guy on my lake who's a really good wakeboarder. At one point I told him I was getting all the way around on the backroll, landing on the board, but I couldn't hang on the handle. He looked in my boat and said, "You're not using that slalom rope for wakeboarding are you?" He said he wouldn't even try the backroll using a slalom rope-way to much stretch. I proceeded to watch this guy do some huge tricks and he landed everything.
If you think about it, if there's a lot of stretch in the rope, you probably get recoiled back into the boat when you launch.
I went to a no stretch line and it really made a difference. Thanks for advice on the Fish. _________________ Go big or go home. |

| ok guys relax heres the thing with holding on to the handle. The load and release thing i feel is over rated. The backroll is a very simple trick and requires a very smooth progressive edge. When first learning them i found that you can auctually cut a lot less hard then you think. Keep the rope in close to your hips and once you get your pop initiate the rotation and you should be money. be sure to look over you front should for sure though |

Another tip:
Keep both hands onthe handle
You will be in more control and have to work a lot less.
Break it down into steps:
Stand tall
Progressive edge (edge is hardest at the top of the wake)
Look over lead shoulder
Both hands on handle
keep eyes open to spot landing
ride away
Good Luck _________________ Don't let go of the rope |

Amy, do you stand tall at the last minute like anormal wake jump, or do you go into it tall, that is what it looks like to me
but then how can you edge effectively if you are already tall/
TIA |

k9fxr,
Go into the trick standing tall. don't cut first then try to stand tall. cut out, stand tall, and cut in.!!
Best of luck!! _________________ Don't let go of the rope |

k9fxr,
forgot to add this.
You have to stand tall and be on your heel edge. Act like you are playing tug-of-war with the boat. I hope this helps..... _________________ Don't let go of the rope |

| You can cut with your legs bent, just make sure that with your legs as straight as can be when you hit the wake. I kind of rockl my weight to my back foot and look over my shoulder, if you do that the wake should kick you high and all the way around. |
