I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips on landing the roll to revert. I tried it for the first time this weekend and I can't figure out why I'm sliding out or over rotating. I can land big HS FS 180s but I can't seem to get this right. In the last sequence of the clip my arm is extended up and away from my hip, could this be affecting my rotation? Is there something wrong with my cut? Any suggestions?

Second question: What does a mexi back roll look like? Sometimes when I do a backroll it looks like I go rail over rail; I think I did this one right ... is this what a backroll is supposed to look like?

Thanks for the help!

Ok you are sliding out because your backroll is a little bit overrotated, so take a shorter cut. It will also help to let go with your front hand a little ealier to make the 180. Other than that, just land like you would on a hs fs 180 and you will ride it away.

Do you actually cut different than a backroll when you do the roll to revert cuz I cut the same then edge away from the boat at the last second and look over my shoulder...sometimes I over-rotate and other times I under-rotate the 180?

Several things - first off, you need to "glue" the handle to what will become your front hip as you come around - in the video, your handle is up around your chest and you have no rope control to speed up or slow down your rotation
Keep you handle low and at your waist throughout the entire trick, and when you come around on the 180, make sure it is in tight to your lead hip

Second, to keep you from sliding out, spot the water early and then look at the shore, that should keep you from sliding out

Good luck

keep the right arm on the handle and let go the left one, you should be fine, well it works for me. take a shorter cut too.

PB-
You are overrotating. It is as simple as that. The R2R is a much slower rotation than a regular backroll. You don't have to spin it nearly as hard as you are in the clip. Slow everything down. I do throw it a little bit more away from the boat than a regular backroll. Also, you can spot your landing SO early on this trick, much earlier than a backroll. Be sure you are spoting your landing and when you come out of the rotation, push the handle back towards the wake. Put it in your hip pocket of your lead hip. This will help you from overrotating. Good luck, you will stomp it in no time.

BTW-
I live in Rockford and ride all over GRand Rapids, if you ever want to ride, hit me up. We ride usually a couple times during the week at night and Sat and Sun we ride first thing in the morning. We are always looking for extras. Plus you can teach me that Batwing in your profile.

hey guys i've only had the opportunity to go 3 times since my last post but im still having problems with this trick. i made a small clip of me trying it yesterday - http://www2.gvsu.edu/~vereshmj/help.html .

i'm getting rediculously close and it probably has to do with my handleor body position, but i dont know what to do to correct it. i do this every time, does anyone have some suggestions? should i pull the handle in to my hip before i pop off the wake?

thanks again,
michael

Look at your lead arm when you land, you come in with your elbows glued to your rib cage, which is perfect - but about half way through, it looks like your arms get pulled out from your body, and on your landing, your lead arm is fully extended and WAY out in front of you, when it should be right on your front hip, that is why you fall backwards

Ill try to post a video tonight and show you what I mean, it really helps me learning when I watch how other people do certain tricks

I think you should continue the edge on landing and ride towards the shore....when you land, your board is pointing towards the boat. You momentum is towards the shore, thus the slip out. Check out The Book, they discuss this in there.

Here you go..

Watch where my hands stay throughout the roll2reverts and where it is when I land, low and in line with my front hip, I let it out to keep from over-rotating - its a .wmv file

thanks rhettb for the post! I really appreciate you taking the time to post that video. I see what you're saying when i watch your video compared to mine.

There's no doubt in my mind that I'm going to get this trick, i just couldnt figure out how my hand was getting out so far in front of me. I'm going on a trip to Norris Lake in Tennessee for the next 10 days so hopefully i can bust hard for a week and learn some new stuff. BTW - It's nice to see someone ride regular and switch, no doubt ur a good rider. Thanks for all the help!!

Do you do anything differant with the first half of a r2r then you do with a backroll?
Or is it the same until you come around and THEN you pull the handle to your front hip Question

yea, its not that different...first thing i did wrong was i was cutting too hard. just take it w2w so you don't over-rotate. Next, once you get in the air push the board up and away from you, look in the direction you are spinning and keep your arms glued to your rib cage (i found this helped me the most with keeping my handle at my hip). You will spot the water quickly and you will automatically go to fakie all you have to do is let go of the handle. Don't let go too early, you'll feel it and you'll know when to let go. Good luck, hope this helps Smile. If you need any help I can slow up a video to frame by frame. Let me know how it goes. GL

Yea i know what you mean about over rotating. I was trying to throw my backrolls way to early and was over rotating like a mo fo. But now ive got em down solid and ready to try a r2r. I will try to get some video of em soon so you guys can tell me what im doing wrong. Man you got em down pretty quick.

yea it only took me a few times out to get this trick. it is pretty easy as long as you can do a backroll and big HS FS 180s. just think about taking a short cut and taking the trick up. you'll learn it fast, i think its easier than the backroll - at least i'm more consistent with it. i wish i could go more than once a week cuz i want to learn a whirly by the end of the season, oh well. gl!
