Anybody see the 50 Cent performance? I was wondering who else he mouthed besides Fat Joe. As a person he is losing my respect, he mouths Jadakiss, Fat Joe and Nelly. Wish he would keep his mouth shut and not let his gangstar side come out. It will eventually lead to the downfall of Hip Hop.

I thought the Kanye West performance was incredible, but maybe thats because he is one of my favortie rappers of all time.

I know it doesn't. But what he is doing is causing alot of trouble and is giving the genre an even worse reputation.

wakeboarderdave1, you need to leave hip hop to the underground hip hop scene and rap to these guys. Hip Hop = Swollen Members, Aesop Rock, LMNO, etc. Rap = 50cent, fatjoe, etc. and then there are some inbetweeners that are either in the middle or jump back and forth (kanye... love that guy) I don't not like a lot of these guys, but I don't think that they are Hip Hop (IMHO)

Is it any different than what 2 Pac and Biggie , Easy E and Dre, etc. used to do years ago? I don't think it's anything new.

Peter is right it's been going on before MC Shan was battling KRS1 for Queens Bridge. Grandmaster Caz was dissing Suger hill gang in 76.
The one thing I did enjoy about fifftys performance was him bringing MOBB DEEP out underground and hard.
Props to Kanye for getting his.

How can you say Eminem has no talent? Didn't you see 8 mile or listen to some of his music?

M&M is a gimmick. Plain and simple. 100% pure gimmic. He doesn't have talent - he has a niche. And anyone can act, when they character they are portraying is themselves. I would get awards for the Erik Jernberg story too.

No it does not, thanks Russian for being reasonable. 50 Cent has more to do with the pulse of POP music than hip hop. 50 Cent was good for about 2 weeks when he first came out. Then the rap style that sounds like he just had 4 Vicodin and a shot of Nyquil got old - FAST.

Remember one thing children, this is about selling records. Pure, simple, no more, no less...
Don't even bother wasting your brain cells thinking any harder than that.

True. But when assertions about a performer gets into talking about defining or carrying a genre of music - some can chime in right? Opinions are worth sharing, regardless of record sales. Look at whats happened to Ashlee Simpson for example...

Amen, Erik. I can't stand Kanye West. He's one of the most plain jane rappers i've ever heard in my life and I can't figure out why he's popular.

There are just sooooo many more technically skilled rappers out there.

But if we HAD to name one 'recent' rapper who can be put in the Hall of Fame after just a short period of time in the spotlight, only Nas can claim the distinction. All the rest can claim to have been shot 5 times, used to be a gang(wang)ster, were in a feature film, etc etc, but they aren't good rappers.

I used to listen to hip hop a while back but I'm getting to the point where I can't stand it anymore.

Erik Jernberg, you have any suggestions on some good rap?

Everything on the radio is complete crap right now. I'm digging deep in my CD collection waiting for some good songs to show up on the radio.

As technology has advanced, it has become easier and easier to make hiphop/rap music. This has diluted the talent pool to the point that there are no great artists. Because of the mass amount of artists, there is no money in being good, only in being played. The greatest rapper could come along, and without a good label and a good clear channel package, we may never even hear him/her. Yes, most good rap isnt heard on the radio, but THAT is where the money is, and these guys gotta eat. Why make good rap and starve when you can make the pop stuff and live like a king?

Any kid with a computer can make production quality beats and loops.

I think that is what is driving this "resurgence of rock". Not everyone can just pick up a guitar, find a band to surround himself with, make good music together, and get it out to the masses.

the only rap I listen to is underground, once the rappers become mainstream/get a major record label. Thier Cds become cookie cutter music filled with the words n*gger Taco Bell Chalupa and Bubb Rubb and skits before and after every song just to fill the album...

thats just my oppinion

jason_ssr, I definitely agree with you. The synthesized sound is really getting on my nerves. I can't stand that slowed down voice sound. Sounds so stupid.

Who? Mike Jones

no talent ass clown

The Diddy show that was the VMAs this year sucked. The whole thing could have been shot on film from a blimp inflated by the self-proclaimed party god's ego.

In general live rap performances are the worst. Just one guy mumbling into the mic and 10 of his merry men in various nba, nfl, mlb jersies shouting random crap into their mics.

Saw Public Enemy back in the day, I don't think you could understand one word over the bass and 20 people randomly yelling into the mic. Talk about sticking out like a sore thumb though. Got a few evil looks when my buddy and I decided to get the pic in front of the air brushed Bently or $$ sign. Apparently whities can't pose in front of the air brush crap. Classic old school tools we looked like.

I didn't see all of the VMA's but I heard that MC Hammer came out and performed.....As for 50 cent, not only does he suck but he isn't even as "gangsta" as he claims he's basically a snitch, he ratted out some of his "homies" or something in order to get less jail time. And he has the nerve to call people "wankstas" I'd like to see fifty cent come out with a song that doesn't involve being in the club, or having sex with girls for once (how origional)

I'm goin to stick to my bay folks like the great Mac Motherf****** DRE (RIP) and all the new bay area talent like the federation, frontline, TEAM,san quinn, Messy marv, balance, and Ya Boy.

I know this is off subject but did anyone see Rkelly's performance, did he look like a skitso(spelling?) or what it was hella confusing watching him switch from character to character.

IMO yes. In general that song, and video series might be the dumbest/lamest/worthless waste of money in the history of all video making.

Josh, maybe it would be more accurate to say, that the talent pool is all equally average. My wife and I rent out a room to a freind who is a DJ (remember his pic with Mike in the PP thread?), so I hear alot of the new stuff and underground stuff. Being a rap fan for many years, i feel I have a good ear for what is good (though I dont listen to it much any more because of this diluted talent pool) and the stuff is good. not great, but good. However, the stuff my roomie makes is just as good, and the stuff all his buddies make is just as good. He samples my bro and I on guitars all the time and tweaks it and loops it to make new sounds for his beats. However, any kid with a computer can do this, and do it well. Not saying my boy isnt talented, but he is just as talented as whats out there and so are thousands of guys looking for a break.

QBert was here last weekend. You seen his new deck??

There is alot out there, But a good start would be Atmosphere(are they still underground??? Twisted Evil )
Living Legends(especially Murs and The Grouch)
Mystik journeymen(luckyiam and and sunspot jones from living legends)
Immortal technique(very political, but one of the best mc's around)
Andre Nickatina aka dre dog aka the new jim jones
Heiroglyphics(not so underground anymore but still sick)
Talib kweli(again not underground, but sick, especially his stuff with dj Hi-Tek)

hhhmmm I'll post some more later
