Hey Guys,

I had a "LITTLE" accident Embarassed while enjoying myself recently, when I landed in the flats after the biggest air i have ever {allmost} pulled off , my right knee decided it couldn't handle the impact so it busted my ligaments and cartlidge and put me in all sorts of pain, looks like i'm out of action for a while, has anyone else ever sustained this sort of injury?? if so, apart from medical help, how did you strengthen and prevent this happening again when you got back out behind the boat ? Any suggestions will be appreciated, Sad I've got plenty of time to read any response Laughing

Any leg excersise will help some. But no matter the training you go threw there is always a chance your knee won't handle the impacts... But once healed try to strenghten up you leg muscles, quads, hamstring, etc.. Quads play a big role in supporting the knee...

Good advice Markymarc. I actually had this happen to me only a few weeks ago. First weekend of august i was out and landed with my knee straight from a tantrum, finding out now that it's a torn MCL, not sure how bad, possibly a little bit of maniscus and strained ACL. I gotta get into a brace if i wanna ride again apparently, doing excercises now to strengthen the areas in the leg above that marky mentioned. Good luck! dont get back too early though...you're your best judge, but you don'twant to be done for longer because u wanted to get back out there. I want to ride so bad and may start next week with a brace, but it's been hard to stay off for this long, but will be worth it when i get back on a board.

not quite in your league, small miniscus tear, landed straight legged off a kicker, heard a small pop as I landed.

That was a month ago, physio says I might be able to run this week, no wakeboarding...........but I did sneak out the other day, but stayed flat.

Just bite the bullet, do all the exercises, get down the gym more, building a stronger back I think helps no end on the water.

ice too, and ibuprofen.

A little prevention will save you tons of pain and increase your knees' longevity. Everyone should stretch before they ride. 10 min in the boat before you go or when you are waiting for your run. A lot of minor injuries can be prevented and recovery from majors will be faster. This may sound silly but doing yoga everyday will save your knees.

well my bro did some stuff to his leg a couple years back... pulled and tore some stuff like you... he rode 2 weeks later against dr.'s orders and he can still feel it when he rides today... so my advice is stay off of it but dont baby it... the fastest way to heel a sprained ankle is to walk on it so just wear a brace for a little bit

bakwudz, yoga doesn't sound silly! i go to a class a couple of times a week at they gym and it helps with flexibility and strength. EVen if there aren't any classes nearby, you can always grab a video and do it at home. Smile

Thanks for the responses, I will continue with my physio therapy ( the chick isn't bad looking either Wink ) and sit it out for a while ( don't have a choice!! Evil or Very Mad ) , If i can offer any usefull advice at all, then i totally agree with wieght training etc for the legs, i started to do this when i first started riding but sort of got lazy and now look what happened, it could of happened regardless of training but anything that helps strengthen has to be a bonus and I'll give you 3 quick reasons why..
#1... Crying or Very sad It really SUCKS watching your mates rip apart perfect water conditions while you have to be an observer!
#2..... Knee injurys HURT......BAD!!!!!!!! Crying or Very sad ( mine did anyway )
#3.....It pain in the ass having to walk with crutches.

So if you dont allready do exercise , I would start, seriouslly this sucks sitting at a computer typing rather than riding and having fun, knees are a valuable asset you need to look after, especially when you're an old fart (29) like me Laughing

Keep ripping but!!!!!!!!!! no pain no gain! ( yeah right Puppy Eyes )

Grand_Pop You're not that old........ just had my ACL reconstructed back in April ( injury actually occured July 1995) and I've got 10+ yrs on you.

It's not your Quadriceps you need to work on if it's an ACL injury, it's the Hamstrings. This muscle group is what you need to keep the tibia from "sliding forward from the femur" to put it in the simplest terms.

But you do need to work on the overall strength and coordination of all the muscles in the lower extremity Wink
Do a search for "ACL/Knee injuries" and you will find several informative posts about rehab and surgical intervention.

I'm going to get on the board over labor day weekend too. Orthopod knows it and wished me luck. Wink
