You you should be a little more specific. There are a couple of models on the 12" JL line. The W0, W3, W6, and W7. I'll go ahead and discount the W0 as it is an entry level speaker.
The W3 is a decent speaker, you can run it off a small amp it will perform well, takes quite a bit of abuse.
The W6 needs a bigger amp, I'd say 300-500 watts rms to get it to perform well. These will hit very hard. Close to competition level.
The W7 is basically competition. It loves power so no less than 500 watts rms to get good performace. These speakers pound hard, but be careful with them, they tend to burn out if you play them for long periods of time. |

I have a JL 13w7 in my boat with a 1000/1 JL amp and it POUNDS! I was told by many people that the w7 series is the best sub ever made and I believe it. _________________ 2004 Malibu Wakesetter VLX

| I have two 12" JL W6 v2 and they are awesome. Hit really hard and also sounds really good. If you just want obnoxious bass go with the w7 but I like the w6 v2's better |

| the JL's are nice, but they require a lot of power from some very pricey amps. i would push at least 500 watts of RMS into them to get full potential. or just get an amp that is 1 ohm stable, and wire your subs at 1 ohm and you'll get a sh!tload of power. |

| The only NEW subs they have out are the W1's. They are replacing the W0 line. They are a good entry level speaker, solidly built. And are as good if not better than the current W0's. |

I had the same problem (its fixed now) and we brought the boat in for its 10 hour break in check-up and the guys tweaked everything and found it was a short in one or two of the tower speakers within the canister. The amp automatically will shut off/protect in order to protect the speakers and wiring and itself. The amp is not broken I don't think, although they sent us a new one and we used it anyways. |

The W1's have a different ring too, its rubber instead of foam so it will withstand outdoor elements much better. The W6v2 have the same ring I believe.
I just installed a 12W6 but need a better amp. The speaker is hungry, right now it wont even make your nose hairs rattle. Anyone had luck with Diamond Audio marine amps? |

| If you are gonna go with a W7, make sure you get the right specs on the box, because W7's need a lot more room than say the W1's or W3's. If you dont have enough air space in the box it wont sound as good as is should. JL subs are sick. |

I bought a JL 10" about 6 years ago for my car. It has been through 1 accident (totaled a 4-runner, not my fault) and still hits. keep in mind also that it's 6 YEARS OLD. thumbs up on JL Audio. _________________ "will work for boat gas" |

Man i have 1 10"-W3 in my Gravity Games Launch and JBL 900 watt amp not sure of the model. Dude this thing pounds. I have a friend who is a manager at car toys and bulit a down firing box resin coated and all, dummy plate so it looks like there is no sub there at all. It pounds. 4 Focal 6 1/4 componets in the boat and 4 MB Quartz discuss on the tower. You can here it before you see me coming. _________________ Chris H.

What other subs with dual voice coils rival the JL Audio's sound. I never hear anything about any other type of sub. Is everyone bias to just these subs? _________________ My therapist says it is all your fault. |

Starting out with a good product, make it easy to get, along with good marketing, yeah that's usually a winning combination. Better exists but only you the listner can determine that.
I have two 12" JLW6v2 D4's and am very happy with them in JL spec'd slot loaded boxes. I was recently looking to offer NVS customers with a quality sub and started working with Alumapro. Not a big company by JL stds. but have since tested one of the 12" Alchemy RX subs they built for me. I put one side by side with the JL W6 with the same programing and power. I was pleased to hear that not only was the RX measurably louder, it was also more precise, much like you'd expect from a sealed box. This is probably due to the aluminum cone that Alumapro has perfected.
I'm sure others exist but maybe not with the necessary materials for boat use.
