You should pick it up quite quickly but you'll still have to work at it. Major difference when riding is that 90% of the time that your on a snowboard you are on an edge. _________________ O+<| |

I started out wakeboarding after snowboarding and found it to be quite similar, but like madtekniques said you are almost always on an edge. Just take it easy at first and get used to the differences and you should do fine. Just remember that wiping out on the snow is harder on your body than wiping out on the water. Good luck! _________________ "What counts is not necessarily the size of the the dog in the fight. Its the size of the fight in the dog." - Gen. George S. Patton |

been out a total of maybe 4 times wakeboarding cuz I had to find something to do for the summer and just 2 seasons of snowboarding but I went maybe 50 to 60 times each season.haven't really got the hang of wakeboarding too much but did notice that when I would get up, more of my weight would have to be in the back to stay up. in snowboarding its more too the front, not a whole lot like leaning over or something but enough to keep control and turn. I always had the habit of riding the wakeboard like the snowboard and then the front of the board would catch and i would hit hard.eventually I learned . and ya, when you start off, you'll be using the edge a lot....at first to learn how to stop, most important, and then eventually doing and linking turns. hope you have fun, with both sports, you'll have something to do almost all year long. now I don't feel so bad when summer comes |

Yes, you always need to be on toe edge or heel edge, even if youre not turning, otherwise youll catch and edge and take a digger. Also, slide turns (which feel similar to butterslides, power slides) are the building blocks of snowboarding, although there is not so much effort required like when you break the fins free on water. Oh yeah, and weight on the foot you want to go downhill. Cant be scared to lean over your lead foot and shoulder points todn the mountain. _________________ Long Island, NY & Canada Lake, NY (addirondacks)

i completely disagree with that statement. i mean sure, you can have worse crashes since it's a more solid surface, but i find that i have a hard core headache after every wakeboarding session. idn, maybe i just have to push myself harder when wakeboarding cuz i'm not as good at it and get to do it less. _________________

Foote, i've been snowboarding for almost 8 years (granted i hardly get to do it now that i'm in miami) and my best advice for starting is to take a lot of advil before you start. you're going to fall a lot your first couple days. it is pretty similar to wakeboarding because you steer and cut the same way, but it is much less forgiving. also when i started snowboarding i had this tendency to crouch because i had been skiing since i was really little, but you should try and stand up and keep your back more straight like when you're wakeboarding. stick with it and i'm sure you'll do fine _________________ ...and when you're done say what a lovely tea party. |

sorry, incorrect. wakeboarding you usually have your weight centered or slightly back... snowboarding you mostly have your weight on your front foot uless you're in powder. and you let your back foot slide back and forth. _________________

numbfoot, ok yea you put just enough weight on your front foot so that you can move your back foot, but you try and stay as centered as possible and still be able to cut...especially if you're hitting a kicker _________________ ...and when you're done say what a lovely tea party. |

| I tried to make the transition from wakeboarding to snowboarding... It never really happened... I didnt like the fact that the speed was not constant, and I didnt really feel snowboarding was as relaxing... |

dmb, it's all about feeling comfortable on the board and that only happens after practice. i'm sure when you started wakeboarding it wasn't very relaxing...plus it helps that you aren't freezing your ass off _________________ ...and when you're done say what a lovely tea party. |

numbfoot, if you smack your head on snow or water with the same amount of force I guaruntee the snow will hurt more. Normaly you would never hit as hard on the snow as you would the water because on the water you are going faster most of the time. IMO. _________________ "What counts is not necessarily the size of the the dog in the fight. Its the size of the fight in the dog." - Gen. George S. Patton |

| It matters less what you land on and more how you land. When you're learning either sport you can have some hard slams even when taking it easy. I broke my helmet the first time out on a snowboard when I caught my heelside edge. I highly recommend helmet, wrist guards, and butt protection when starting out on a snowboard. It's for comfort and to prevent those big and small injuries that keep you from riding. |

yea, i agree. the first day i ever snowboarded i broke both bones in my left arm. as i beginner i also suggest wrist guards, but i don't know so much when you get better. a couple years ago i tried a corked 5 over a 20 ft table and i got tossed by the lip and landed upsidedown with all my weight on my left arm. it broke my arm (again) at a 90 degree angle, but the ski patrol guy who saw it said that more likely than not if i had been wearing wrist guards instead of my arm breaking where it did (about 2 inches up from my wrist), i would have shattered my wrist. oh and definitely wear a helmet, i cannot tell you how many times i've hid my head on ice, rocks, rails, etc. _________________ ...and when you're done say what a lovely tea party. |
