A friend of mine has a mastecraft that has been converted. It costs him half as much as me for a day on the water and given the price of petrol (gas) in the UK then it will pay for itself very quickly. The only thing you'll have to watch for is the valves don't get lubed the way they would with petrol so expect theit lifespan to be a little shorter.

I drove a propane powered truck for several years and had no problems with the valves. In fact, when I sold the truck with about 250,000 miles on it, the engine was still clean and running fine ( OK, it leaked a little oil but fords do that anyway ). According to "propane people" Propane is just Carbon and Hydrogen so you will have only Carbon Dioxide and Water after combustion which keeps all the crap out of your engine and INCREASES the life of the engine and, of course, saves the planet from harmful emissions. The problems with propane here in the US are availablity and price. When I first started running propane it was 1/4 the price of petrol, now it's almost the same.

Ideally gasoline is just carbon and hydrogen, so is diesel, methane, natrual gas, and most other things we burn...

Octane, C8H18, is Hydrogen and Carbon but gasoline and diesel have a lot of other stuff as well. Natural Gas (Methane), Propane, Butane ...etc all have a Cx H2x+2 structure which would produce only H20 and CO2 under perfect combustion (which is never 100%)

There is more to it that that....many of the additives to gasoline/diesel are for the engine and also to boost the octane. Gasoline has a higher energy content than propane as well, so you will get more miles per gallon with gasoline. Propane usually cost less though, which makes up for it. Also, propane has a higher octane than gasoline which is one reason why it doesn't need the additivies gasoline does. Proprane does require less engine maintainance and does burn cleaner.
