There are two basic patterns. You can come back through your path (preferred) to keep driving in a linear path. Or you can just go out and make a big turn and cross your wake.
Both pictures below are for a Regular foot HS or Goofy TS (so the rider is always in the circle.
The angle of the boat path crossing the wake is all personal preference. Generally for most riders the angle should be somewhere between 75 and 90 degrees, I have never heard of someone going greater than 90. Again, it is all preference and you will need to experiment with it.
Remember to increase the throttle as you begin to initiate your turns, as the boat will naturally slow down. Come out of the last turn, make sure the speed is level, and you have a nice straight path across the wake and well beyond untill the rider has landed.

WakeRider221, All wakes/waves do not cancel or diminish eachother when they cross paths, they literally stack together for a brief moment, hence "double up"
See my pictures above, it is when you drive back across your wake and as a rider time your jump at the precise moment the wakes have converged.
ps if you don't know what a double up is, you may not need an expert board/bindings.

| yah, gonna have to go with jryoung on this one. if ya dont know what a double up is, ur probably not ready for an advanced ride. demo and get something that fits ur riding needs and will allow you to progress. most likely you wont learn anything on an advanced stick except the old infamous 'roll to faceplant'

ive been wakeboarding for a couple of years now and i didnt know anything about it when i started. i skate and snowboard so i picked it up really quickly. i can jump w2w and suface 180. the whole reason i joined this website is because i know nothing about the sport and i really enjoy doing it, so i really wanted to learn more about it. i want a beter board because when i got on my friends hyperlite i realized how much nicer his board rode.

gotcha, but just know that an advanced board isnt gonna make ya ride better, most of the beginner/intermediate boards will ride very well and help you progress quicker. what hyperlite board does he have?

WakeRider221, What model board was it? The important thing the remember when picking a board is size and dimensions, brand name should come last. Hyperlite in wakeboarding is the equivalent of Burton in snowboarding. They have the marketing machine to attempt to convince you they are the best.
Find out the specifics of his board, meaning: Rocker type, length, tip/tail width, base design, molded fins, screw in fins, center spine etc. Compare this to yours, how is it different. When you realize what characteristics you like best about a board, put them together and find who makes a board that will best fit your requirements.
Good luck on your quest, board shopping can be difficult, but as I have mentioned put brand name last and focus on what is going to be the best ride for you.

Here are some comments about the TFD, these will be some good point to follow when shopping in the future.
2.7" Abrupt Continuous Rocker - The speed you would expect along with a slightly higher explosiveness
Step Down Rail - A moderate rail makes the board sit slightly lower on the water
Wide Tip/Tail Profile - Rolls over smooth, stands up higher over the wake for a greater kick
Deep Center Beam - Helps push out water on landings for super soft landings, even for riders that land more centered
Four 1.1" A-Wing Machined Aluminum Fins - Designed for a quick reaction time and a strong overall edge hold
6-Degree Angled Fins - Creates a smooth turn with a stronger bite once on rail

It would be kind of useless to go through the trouble to drive one if it didn't

| Lyle, I'd love to take credit for it, but I just copied it from a wakeboarding forum about 3 years ago. Luckily, it survived a Windows XP blue-screen death.

DaveTO,
Don't worry if you ever lose it I still have the original. I made it for the guys I ride with and laminated it to keep in the boat.

jryoung, has it correct on the LEFT.
You want the kink so when you come back through the D-up you are already in-between your wakes so you can go back the other way with out having to drag the rider over your rollers.
The one on the right works also but right after the rider lands the driver needs to make a hard turn to stay between his wake.
The one on the right is easier to drive right and the one on the left once you get it is the more preferred way to go.
The approach angle is a rider preference. I like mine a bit open.

The problem with the one on the left is you end up getting a mini double up. Watch when the boat turns the wake gets bigger on the inside of the turn and smaller on the outside, so by putting a kink in the D-up like the one on the left there is barely anything there to hit. Kind of like going to the strip bars you get yourself all worked up for something that never happens.

Lyle That's why as a driver you make a quick left (or right turn), and when you come back around cross the wake in an area after the boat settled from the intial turn. You'll have to still cut back to your original path but the turn in not as drastic if you make the big looping single turn.
If you are going to make a single turn, I would suggest creating a small kink in the wake, harder to drive, harder to hit but they are fricken huge. Ryan Seabring drove the for me on the LFTAA 4 years ago.

I disagree with some of the drawings here. When you cut through your waves on a convex curve the waves are smaller. Your d-ups will be much smaller if you cross them at the point where the waves are curving. If you hit them when they are straight they will be much bigger. Also if you hit them on a concave curl they will be huge. That's how you do T-ups. Case in point. Watch when you make your turns for your d-ups. The inside of the turn has HUGE rollers that form from the combined wakes while the outside dissipates.

Spyplane8, that's how I like EM......
The further away you drive from the d-up the softer it gets.
Rule of thumb in my boat, drive it as tight as you can.

Not if you know how to ride through them. You just absorb them. If you've ever been in some snowboard parks, some of them have bumps a lot like rollers in wakeboarding that help you gain speed, you just bend your knees on the way up and accelerate down to pump through them. just bend your knees going through them.
