Sorry to be bringing this backroll problem up again but i've read a lot of posts saying how bad/ugly mexican backrolls are and how they are not proper, unfortuanetly sometimes i do them but lately have been trying to change this by edging all the way through the wake. So my question is how do i prevent doing a mexi and does it affect my backroll if i tuck my head in.(For some reason i just can't get myself to look up and away from the boat.) Thanks for the help.

Yes, that's why you do mexican backrolls. Look up and away. Your body follows your head.

A progressive backroll is a lot like a raley, only you hold the handle in at your hips so you rotate around it while leading with your head. Think of doing a raley by throwing the board up behind you as you leave the wake but keep your handle in at your hips. Ever seen those failed raley attempts that turns into something similar to a backroll? There is a reason for that. Those people just have too much weight on their back foot and keep the handle in, that's why they do a back roll.

yeah i seem to be edging away from the boat a lot more than i originaly did, but will try the raley like edge next time, but still is it posible to do the progressive backroll even if your head looks down.

I'm not too sure if it's possible to do it without leading with your head. With every flip, your body will follow your head. You want to look over your lead shoulder and throw your head so the back of your head is over your trailing shoulder.

learn a backroll. but once you learn it, dont ever do it again. it is ugly. do things like hs off axis 540s with the ole and a mute grab, very similar to a backroll, just with a fs 180 at the end and 1 hand on the handle

summary: straight backrolls are ugly, learn them so that you can make them look goodd with variations. ie backroll revert, off axis fs spins (similar) etc.
