If you aren't planning on throwing any big airs or big tricks, a tower isn't necessary. I don't know how many times I've seen people with a brand new nautique or any other badass boat that don't know what the hell they are doing. It's actually pretty funny to see someone with a $60k boat, $500 board, $300 bindings and not be able to get up. Anyway, a tower isn't needed until you progress.

last i checked you didnt need to reach a certain skill level before you are "allowed to have" or "need" a tower. thats stupid. they are functional no matter what skill level you are because you can put your boards in the racks so you dont have to worry about walking into one of them. its also easier to get up out of the water when you are riding w/ a tower because the rope pulls you UP instead of straight. oh yeah, and you can also drape your towels over the top of the tower if you want them to get in the sun and dry out.

in the end no, you dont need one. they are VERY nice to have though. i couldnt imagine riding without a tower or pylon.
