I few people on an airplane from Japan were quarantined in San Jose yesterday... Kia I think this has to do more with overpopulation than politics... _________________ If I agreed with you we would both be wrong. |

| The kid at your school is only at risk if he's been in or around someone who has been in an Asian country that has record of contamination. Otherwise it's probably just the flu. You do have to be quarantined, but only for as long as the sickness lasts, which should be a week or 2 with good antibiotics. |

| No one on that plane is San Jose had SARS. It was just a scare-thank goodness. I read in an article that some of the people on the plane were more concerned about being held an extra two hours then whether or not they were in danger of catching the disease. Priorities I tell you! |

seattle has four posible cases. a 4 and 5 year old pair of brothers returning from wong dong china and two others. kai- that is some pretty negative stuff you wrote. i highly doubt sars is a form of warfare, it is just another version of a flu that exhists. this i think could be caused by over using antibiotics. it isn't really being spread in the u.s. confirmed cases have been isolated and its only contagious when you have symptoms. shortness of breath, and flu like symptoms with a temp of 100.5degrees f or higher are symptoms. nor cal- isn't that what they said about aids also. interesting theory. _________________ Thats gonna leave a mark!! |

Two suspected mystery illness cases surface in Florida
Associated Press
Posted April 2 2003, 7:51 PM EST
TALLAHASSEE -- Two Florida residents may have been infected with a virus that has sickened hundreds of people in eastern Asia.
A 21-year-old woman and 36-year-old man who might have contracted sudden acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS, traveled to Asia within the previous 10 days and showed some symptoms of the virus, Florida health officials said Wednesday.

``Because these cases were identified early, it provides us with a greater opportunity to prevent any additional spread of the infection,'' said John O. Agwunobi, secretary of the Florida Department of Health. _________________ It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us the freedom of the press. Apparently most new strains of influenza come from China and the Chinese get it off fowl birds, you know chickens & stuff.
They reckon this SARS probably came the same way.
I guess the big question is... "What exactly are these Chinese doing with their chickens ??".
Maybe it's sexually transmitted  _________________ //============================//

Shoot! I was in someone who was in an Asian country last week!
For real though, it seems like, compared to the population as a total, your chances of getting SARS are extremely rare. I wouldn't even give it a second thought, unless one of my associates got it. I think the CDC people, or whoever is in charge, probably has a bit of a handle on containing this thing. _________________ I walk 47 miles of barb wire, I got a cobra snake for a necktie, a brand new house up on the road side, and it's made out of rattlesnake hide |

ONly 2,228 cases? That's nothing. and a 97% survival rate. That's pretty good. If there wasn't a war on though, the media would be calling this the coming of the new black plague. _________________ I walk 47 miles of barb wire, I got a cobra snake for a necktie, a brand new house up on the road side, and it's made out of rattlesnake hide |

7 People have died in Toronto now. I'm pretty worried 'cause I go to a like 80% oriental school. And a lot of them went to China for spring break. It's funny though, me and my buddies totally blow it out of proportion. I'm not too worried about getting it. I'm pretty sure it's only capable of killing people if they have weak immune systems.
Toronto has the 3rd highest number of infected people in the world.
1. China
2. Hong Kong
3. Toronto
4. Singapore
Goes to show you how our cultural diversity has changed. |

| Not to show disrespect by any means. But more people die everyday from car wrecks than this disease. I wouldnt worry to much about it. |

I agree. (though I'm sure that if I got it, I would be crapping myself) But the common flu, I bet it has a survival rate that isn't much better than 97%, when you factor in that a lot of elderly people die from the flu. I think it is a big deal because it is new and they aren't sure what they are dealing with yet.
Like the West Nile Virus that we had in New York for the past few years. The news LOVES West Nile Virus, because it has a cool name and is transported via birds. But mostly just the very young or very old or people with immuno deficiencies even get sick.
I was a photographer with the local news untill 2 years ago. We would interview someone from the county health department. They would say "The virus is steadily moving north, and 3 cases have been confirmed in Monroe county. We think it will continue to spread until mid-September. However, there have been no fatalities in Monroe county, and the virus only produces symptoms in the very young, old, and those with imuno deficiencies."
You guess what part of the soundbite I was told to edit into the show. _________________ I walk 47 miles of barb wire, I got a cobra snake for a necktie, a brand new house up on the road side, and it's made out of rattlesnake hide |

| Wow, I totally contradicted myself there. At first I was worried because of the population of my school, but then I realized the only people who have died have been the young or the elderly or those with a weak immune system so I'm not too worried about it. |

Only people who are either elderly or sick from something else usually die. Young, healthy people just get sick, and then are fine. My sister's trip to China with our school's orchestra and band was cancelled. I was looking forward to a week and a half w/out her. DANG. |
