on tuesday i was having an awesome set but i just tried a simple 360..im guessing i had all wrong body posture and stuff..cuz im still learing about the positions of the 360..but i hit the water and board came off and if i can remember right, gashed me below then caught me above the eye....had to take an ER trip..so my question is

is it a little intimidating coming back from the injury and attempting the same trick??

anybody have similar stories? post pics of the injury!

it kinda depends. how bad you were hurt, wether youve landed the trick before, how strong you are physcologically, etc. but ya you usually come back a little nervous.

split open the back of my head... but in the same set went on to land the backroll...ive landed it once since then, boosts my confidence to wear a helmet, i know it doesnt hurt and that it was a freak accident but it does make me second guess a lot.

I cracked a rib trying a 3 a few years ago (after I was already landing them occasionally). You gotta just get back out there and don't think about how you messed up. Go full at it or you'll get hurt worse. Don't give up halfway through cause you're scared. DO IT! Mad

Not quite as bad an injury, but was just going toeside w2w and somehow buried the nose of the board. Ended up slamming my teeth together during the resulting faceplant and breaking one of my front teeth in half. Damage to my ego hurt worse than the tooth (although didn't help that I hate the freakin dentist Mad).

I would say in any sport it's difficult to come back from an injury and a lot of it is mental. I have a history of spraining my ankles playing basketball and it does creep into my head from time to time while I'm playing. Wonder if i'm going to get hurt again or if the ankle is going to hold up. Sucks...

I blew my eardrum trying blind 3s last year. Ive been nervous to try the trick since but I'm going to start trying them again. Also a few years ago when I was tubbing, I connected with a giant double up and hit it at a pretty decent speed. I got launched 10 feet or more and when I came down, my knee hit my face and put my tooth through my lip.

A injury is very intimidating, I was balls to the wall before I broke my leg (still have the rod in my leg to remind me) I think of it this way now, crawl before your run, that's my slogan. It took me 1 full year to start doing inverts again and till this day I'm still nervious pulling new stuff. Tramp practice is key to boost confidence after a injury.

I'd say it depends on whether or not you feel like the injury was a freak accident or not. I think an injury where your board comes off, flies throught the air, and hits you in the face is sort of a freak accident. It doesn't really have anything to do with the particular trick. Now, if you get knocked out doing a raley or 360, sprain your ankle on a tantrum, bust your knee on a specific invert, or something like that, then yeah, reattempting it is probably intimidating. You can imagine how it happened and can't really be sure how to avoid doing it again. In your case, however, it probably won't happen again and if you're worried about it, just tighten your bindings more.

harder you go the harder you fall. usually for me i usually get hurt cause i didnt do my trick 100% and i slacked it. you just need to charge it and hope for the best because trying something new means your going to fall...and maybe get hurt.

You did that damage on a 3 attempt? crazy!

IMO - FEAR keeps you focused. Keeps me learning tricks in a progressive manner so I don't jump too far ahead of my skill level. Being 34 years old also does that but you know what I'm getting at.

Learning new tricks at this age would be a slow process if I spent the entire time worrying about getting hurt. I stick with tricks I know I have a foundation for and work hard every step of the way to dial them in.

Keep at it, you are only young once and once you get old, you can't go back and relive your youth. When you are 34 these words ring loud and clear in your head almost every time you hit the water. Charge it while you can!

WyLd_ChiLd, so true!

wknebraskaweber, I'd say make an attempt at it your first day back, just so that you make your mind know that you are not afraid of the 360, and then afterwards it will be just like you hadn't hurt yourself before. I myself would be kinda scared because I am a wimp Laughing but I don't let it stop me from attempting my new tricks at least every once in a while

This is the mind set after a serious injury (Tib Fib break from a scarecrow), building a foundation on your cut, basic spins and inverts is the safest way to approach wakeboarding. Going for something out of your league opens the door for injury!

wknebraskaweber, it depends on the kind of injury. Splitting my head open wouldn't make be scared because that is just a fluke, but blowing out my knee or tearing all the ligaments in my ankle would definately keep me from wanting to retry a trick.

Raley-Ripped right shoulder out of place, kinda a freak accident cuz the handle slid up my arm when i tried to let go of it and i went backwards when i hit the water and the line snapped over the abrupt stop of my arm and 23 mph boat lol... still get jittery before throwing them although i land them everytime, just a mental block cuz of the injury
Tantrum- hurt my knee, just a weird flip to learn but i got over that one faster cuz i didnt injure as bad
Heel Mobes-Just started attempting, coming close but this trick has given me some of the worst head-aches i've ever had before, mainly just a hard whip-lash and hard edge catch if u miss the handle
Slider-3 inch gash down the right side of my face cuz i was wearin a hard-hat goofin off and had an unsuccessful 12 foot flatbar gap to face to hardhat slicing my head open...once again freak accident

The main thing is commiting to the trick, if u dont go 100% then u wont get as high or come close and thats the main way i've seen injuries occur, after writing all that, i guess its like my 5 dollars and .02 tip

im not sure if theres a certain trick everybody gets hurt on, i mean, you can hurt yourself on anything, raley's are truly very simple tricks, i prefer flippin and spinning but for raleys, the main thing is that you have to commit to the trick 100% cuz if u dont, you wont come 100% down and you will 90% have some face to water action very abruptly Shocked

I'm tryin to learn the 3 now, i try it about a dozen times every day I ride now, just can't hold onto that damn handle after I pass it. Anyways, can't believe you guys all have been injured on 360's... didnt know there was much potential for injury with it at all.

theres potential for anything... but on 360's, u miss the handle, dont get the rotation, go off axis and cant get it back, eat it bad, i mean ya never know

Broke my femur 6 years ago on a scarecrow and till this day haven't done another one. With this injury, it's pure psychological for me because I know I can stick a crow in my sleep but the last thing in my head is the cracking sound of the bone and the tremendous pain. I recovered quickly after my surgery (was on a board a month after my surgery but no jumping, just riding and threw my 1st invert again 6 months later) but at my age, I don't want to go through that again.

I blew out my right knee last year on a TS indy backroll and had surgery to repair it. Although it didn't hurt that much when I did it, the recovery process was much longer and painful they my broken femur. I threw my first TS backroll about 11 months post surgery and this was more from a physical standpoint. I wanted to make sure my knee & surrounding quad muscles were ready to handle impacts from inverts again.

360's can wreck you if you land wrong. I separated a rib when I got caught half way between a HS 360 & 540 and caught my toeside edge. Slapped me so hard and fast that I ripped one of my bindings right off the board.

Basically, you can get hurt on even the easiest of tricks. I had a friend who dislocated a shoulder on a 180. But there's some great advice above - make sure you are ready mentally, physically and most important TECHNICALLY to do a trick. Otherwise I agree, the door is wide open for injuries!

Last year I Bruised the cartalidge and meniscus in my left knee doing an off-axis 3, took about 4 weeks to be 100% again and then on monday i did the exact same trick and hurt the oppostie knee in the exact same fashion, with the same injury, This time i am being smart about it and doing physio and things that promote healing and i played some men's league football this morning and it felt pretty good but as for your question i don't think you can dwell on injuries or you will never progress. But i look at it this way, I have landed the trick way more than it has injured me and if i stop doing OA 3's then i will never learn my OA 5's and my progression stops and i settle as a mediocre wakeboarder. Mediocre doesnt cut it for me, i will be as great as i can be but if it is not gods plans for me to go places with this then perhaps the injuries will continue but I figure may as well go balls out.

i was doing w2w on my wakeskate, and i just grabed a normal indy, and came down, and then my back foot sliped off he end of the board just a little on impact and my front leg twisted up and hit me in the face terribly. It was so scarey, i streched my medial ligament, and couldnt ride for 2 months. took me almost 3 months to even do w2w again, but now im back to it and its fun Smile got my 180s real good now and grabs.

....new one, Heel 5 falls and Heel Mobe attempts.... cant walk right now, it kinda hit me after i was done riding, i pray that it gets better cuz i wanna hit these things, close on both but when you miss the handle, it makes for interesting abrupt falls. I agree, what would wakeboardin be if nobody went all out? gotta do what ya gotta do
