Broken Fibula & Tibia

Last night a friend of mine snapped his Fibula and Tibia on a Tantrum to Blind attemp that he camp up short on. Getting some pins and a rod in his leg at 4pm today. I had to cut off his binding with a knife while his leg was sticking out sideways just above the ankle. Then the longest 30 min boatride back to the dock I have ever made....

Just wanted to see if anyone else has had this injury and if they made a full recovery.... or ever rode again. I'm thinking its going to be hard to get over mentally.

Oh yeah, sorry if I brought anyone down with my story.

Your buddy will definately ride again, but I doubt he'll be doing tantrums to blind unless he was sticking them on a regular basis. Even if he was, it will take some time to get over the mental aspect of this type of injury. Unfortunately, these things stick with you to some degree. Everyone is different though so you never really know. Try to keep it positive.

My roommate did the same thing, his was tib/fib, double compound. The video is really gross as he's bleeding/losing his bone marrow all over the place. Now he rides like there is no tomorrow, many days a week. He's got the titanium rod and pins and everything. Ho doesn't do double ups very often & his only complaint is that the rod is really cold in the wintertime. He's riding in some of the pics in my gallery & is on the video in there as well. We coaches at a wakeboard camp so obviously it doesn't slow you down too much. Tell him good luck for me.

Stephan, Wakeguru, Thanks for the positive notes. Its a real downer to see somebody go down like that. I'll pass along the info to him. I'm sure he will be happy to hear it. Wink

I had this injury in 2000. It is bad, and I still have pain. But I do double ups and can get around pretty well still on my board. It is a bad accident, but is one from which someone can make a recovery. I wish you and your buddy the best.

Ouch...good luck to him on the recovery..sounds like others have come back from it pretty strong.

I dug the end of my board on a 360 tonight and it almost felt like my femur bent just a little...no pain...no problem..but got me thinking since much of the time its just me, my wife, and toddler, when we're in TN (where you need no third)...and a very long way from the dock and a hospital.

Whats the emergency procedure for a compound fracture of the leg?? Stabilization? Getting into the boat etc? Can the injured person help themselves...as I would have to do? Seems pretty freaking painful.

Well it differs. For me, the people that were in the boat tried to hold on to me while the boat went to shore. I was sort of propped onto the swim platform with someone holding my legs and a different person holding my board. A guy on the boat had a cell phone and had an ambulance on the way. They were there when we got to the ramp.

My bindings did not release when I had my accident so the medics cut the bindings off my feet and stuffed some Morphine into me. Then I think they strapped the leg down - I had a bad bad break - it was a mess.

They put me on a stretcher and I was in surgery in proably less than an hour. Of course I could be wrong - it was a really bad day.

That said I recovered. I still have some pain, but I ride. Last year I started landing the trick I broke my leg on - and I got my 540's back. Trammil your buddy will ride again - he will be ok.
