I'm scrapping some old old cabinets for work, and saving the metal trim and such from them. I cant seem to figure out what kind of metal it is though!
I kept it because I thought it was aluminum. It's the same color, non magnetic, a little heavier and stronger, and harder to melt.
I was told it could be white brass. Any opinions?

SS is still magnetic.
Alum alloy would be a good bet if they are pretty heavy and thick. Aluminum ain't the strongest. Could be a zinc alloy too.
Are they like the 1970s era brushed trim?
also, if you take some 600 grit sand paper to alum, it'll blacken your hands. may be a good test.

It depends on the grade of stainless. 316L is not magnetic. 304L usually is magnetic but there are higher grades of 304L that will not be magnetic.
I did not know about the sandpaper test, I'll keep that in the back of my head for future reference.

Found out at the scrap year it was stainless. I was pretty darned sure it wasnt aluminum since I was melting copper, but couldnt get this stuff to melt. 
Now that I have the answer, you can turn the thread into the other type of metal.

criminally_minded, i just saw Stapping Young Lad play with one of my favorite bands, Reflux, about a month ago. I cant really get into their recorded stuff, but at least they were fun(ny) live. The singer looks like a balding demon. haha
