Question - Possible to buy a single board that will....

Is it possible to buy a single board that will work for both me and my wife?

I'm 6' 230lbs and she's 5'8" 130lbs.

We're both totally new to boating and wakeboarding, but Is there a "beginner" board you guys would recommend that we could both share? I'd hate to go out and dump $600-$800 on two boards and find out we dont' like it.

Also, we're not going to have a tower or anything, just using the tow ring on the back of our new Maxum 1800MX 3.0L.

Please advise-

Billy Mac - If you don't get two boards, you'll end up having to change the bindings on the board each time you switch it up anyways. When I started out a few years ago, we got the ladies up on a board the guys were using, but their feet were swimming in the bindings and it wasn't a good ride for them.

We ended up getting a nice small board for the ladies and they liked it ALOT better. Technically, your lady can ride a board big enough for you, but it won't be comfy or very control-able for her... better off getting two if you both plan on riding semi-often. good luck

billymac, if I were you I'd look at getting 2 used setups. You should be able to find a beginner board for $100 easily and decent bindings for $50. A beginner board will last you both a solid couple of years. Take a look on ebay and see what you can find. If you have specific questions about a board you can always ask. You should be looking at boards > 140cm and she should be looking between 134-137cm I would say.

Hey, billymac, if you want to try out wakeboarding without buying the boards first, there are places that have cables that will pull you and even boats to rent time, all coming with boards to use...and vests..and most of those places will have lessons or be able to give you some pointers for sure. I live in florida and just went to Orlando Watersports Complex. It was great, not too expensive, and they had a smaller board to fit my girlfriend pretty well. Check it out in your area. Then when you like the sport, and you will, you can go out and buy you and your girl some gnarly ass boards! Ride ON. Cool

frostymcwake, good idea, but there is only like 5 cable parks in the US. trhe farthest west being TSR, so that might not be to practical.

Yea, well, I didnt see where he was from so I just recommended it. I have a cable park 1.5 hours away so that works for me. Next best thing, Buy a board, try it out. Dont like it? Take it back, Just dont scratch it or anything. Put it on in the water to avoid scratches from the boat or dock. Cool

my family jsut bought 1 board for 4 people smallest being like 100 lbs and the biggest being 250, it was 145 and had xL bindings. i teach everyone on that thing and they love it. so i woudl say learn on a beginnerboard with beginner bindings adn then if you like it trade it in and get you and your wife some rad boards.

Your wife can definitely ride the bigger board that's going to be required by your size, but the bindings will keep her from progressing very far beyond just basic jumping since they'll be fairly sloppy on her feet. When we first started wakeboarding, my wife used my setup and did OK, but when we finally got her something that fit her properly, she said she was instantly more confident because she felt solidly attached to the board, and it reacted more quickly with less effort on her part. It may be that you'll love wakeboarding and she won't be that hot on it, so I'd say to get yourself a used setup to save money, and get something with better quality. If she finds that she really enjoys it, you'll have the necessary justification to go out and spend the money to get her a setup, too. We happen to have an 04 Liquid Force Substance 142 that's been demoed a half dozen times that looks like new for sale. You didn't mention your foot size- email me, and I'll see what we can put together for a good price for you...

You could get one board and 2 pairs of bindings. it would be a pain to switch them out but it is a lot cheaper than two boards

Just go on ebay and find a good deal, i found a brand new (2004) board and bindings (hyperlite board, liquidforce bindings) for less than $200...Or demo and see if you like to board then go out and spend some money.
