Posted: Jun 03, 2005 7:02 pm Post subject: Suave Shampoo as lube? |
|
|
I did a search and have read every thread that mentions using Suave shampoo as lube.
On the plus side, I have seen posts like these:
“Suave shampoo, doesn’t tear up the bindings or break the rubber down as mentioned, cheep, doesn’t hurt anything”
“Suave shampoo... it's bio-degradable and won't dry out your bindings”
But then I have also seen other posts like these:
“Suave shampoo is biodegradable. It might dry out the rubber though.”
“But shampoos are designed to take oil out of your hair, and bindings are made to have oil in them so they don't dry out.”
What do others here think about these conflicting opinions?
Also, I saw nothing one way or another about what, if any, affect Suave shampoo might have on the neoprene portions of the binding. What do people think about this?
Finally, I went to the store tonight to pick up some Suave shampoo to use as lube this weekend and there were dozens of different versions, all with different ingredients, and none of them said “Normal”, “Regular”, “Basic”, or anything like that. Are there certain versions which are more or less harmful to rubber and/or neoprene than others? And are there certain versions that are more or less harmful to the environment than others? _________________ Check out my wakeboarding links page. |

This site is full of posts stating that shaving cream and most soaps are harmful to the lake and/or the binding. I want something that is biodegradable and environmentally friendly and is also not going to harm my brand new bindings. _________________ Check out my wakeboarding links page. |

Well, I will admit that it's not the greatest for the environment, and I don't like to use it for that purpose...but it IS $0.99 a can and it's really fun to say "Beard Buster!" And as far as damaging to your bindings...I'm riding the same pair of Belmonts that I've had since '01. And they're still in tip top shape.
It sounds like you need to just go pick up some binding specific lube though. I don't know much about them though. I just like "Beard Buster!" _________________ Get Frugally Green!

The things is. You are more likely to tear your bindings while forcing your foot into them than any shampoo/soap/shavingcream is going to dry/disolve your bindings. My opinion is that by the time that any affects take place it will be time for a new pair anyway due to excess use. Thats me anyway, some people may think differently and may have their bindings for five years. I on the other hand buy new bindings about ever year or so. _________________ Holly Bay All The Way! |

| pointblank12, its really cheap. I remember at 1 point it being like $.50 or something. I think its around a dollar now. I use it. just mix it with some water and it works just as good as lube. And as stated above, if it dries out your bindings, its gonna take a while. It makes your feet smell good too!! |

It is not a matter of money, but rather time and convenience. I live in an area where there are no wakeboard shops and only a handful of wakeboarders. Soon I will order Fat Sacs and when I do I will get some real lube. But until then I need something to get me by. Some posted suggested that Suave shampoo is the best in terms of being harmless to both the environment and the binding. Others differed in this opinion.
So, I am trying to learn more about this one product. There are already dozens of threads with hundreds of posts about all of the shaving creams, dish soaps, and expensive binding lubes out there. _________________ Check out my wakeboarding links page. |

I personally think all the binding specific lubes suck like duck butter and newt juice. I use shaving cream but have used all sorts of soaps and shampoos. What I like about shaving cream is that it dissapates quickly, my foot tends to slide around a bit when using soap or shampoo.
As far as the enviornment goes, I hardly think that a little soap in the water is no where as damaging as your boat pumping exhaust into the water while you're riding.
