Maybe what he's thiking of is the engine water pump as opposed to the raw-water intake pump?

I think you would want to replace steel with steel and not rubber that would break down over time.

Ok i'll check today. The guy I bought the boat from claimed that it was a steel impeller. We'll see I guess,, the boat is a Supra Sunsport.

I think jvanick has hit the nail. The vendor prolly doesn't know there are two pumps - a raw water pump and circulation pump. If so, doesn't bode well for a regular change of impellers in the past, does it?

Engine oil pumps use a steel "impeller" where the centre of rotation is offset so steel impellers are not unheard of. However, such impellers tend to be referred to as gears, which is what they look like. See: http://www.nsxprime.com/FAQ/Performance/oil_pump_upgrades.htm
