yamaha wakeboard boats??

so i was flipping through my wakeboardin mag yesterday and noticed a yamaha ad and saw they were advertising wakeboard boaots...i may b a lil late on this but i thought they were just tryin 2 rip off the sea doo wakeboard boats...n e body know n e thing else bout em?

Grady, i dont think you can technicaly have a jet wakeboarding boat, they just dont seem to work to well jet powered=crappy wake..

I looked at the Yamahas but they use two stroke engines and suck gas so I went with the sea doo X-20.

Have you guys ridden behind a big jet boat? That's what I thought. Just cuz it's jet doesn't mean a small wake. My friends used to have a 2001 Challenger 20 ft and it set a huge wake when waited.

Awsome, I found someone who has ridden behind a sea doo jet boat. I just got an x-20 (basicly a chalenger 2000 with a tower, and sac) and I was hoping I didnt just make a 20K mistake. Very Happy

Pros:
Better power for a given HP
Better Gas milage per Cubic inch and HP
Fun to drive when not boarding, skiing, tubing
Cheaper than most wakeboarding boats (although I did see an ad in a magazine for the outback someone mentioned, 23k is a good deal; but I saw a moomba for sale around here it was 30k....??)
Looks nice
Fast

Cons:
Not as big of a wake as an inboard.... Thats all I can come up with.

k2_mn, You are misinformed a jet takes more power to run than a prop because it is less efficient.
An inboard will turn circles around a jet. Run full throttle and turn. The jet boat it will skip and slide. An inboard will not. Even if the wake was the same size as an inboard you still have the wash to contend with.

Saying that any boat is a good boat. Some are better than others. As long as your having fun who cares.

Calabria makes the Laguna for around $23k. It is a really nice boat for the money but the dealers don't carry them much. They like the boats that cost more.

It may be a marketing ploy but mercury and sea doo contend that because the jet focus all the power it is more efficient (like a laser) they sat the prop is like a flash light it may be bright but is more dispersed....

I really dont know. What I do know is that I want the ice to melt so I can get on the water!!!

One other thing is that a 240hp jet drive is about half the weight of a 240hp inboard. That may be why is there is so much wash, it is just lighter...?

The only problem I would have with a jet boat is speed consistency. It seems like the boat wouldn't hold speed as well with someone tugging against it.

I have ridden behind both and driven both a fair amount and i would always buy an prop drivenboat for wakeboarding. Even when weighted it is difficult to get a jet boat to throw a firm well defined wake. especially when compared to a conventional set up. Both styles of drive have advantages it really depends what you want to use them for and how much of a compromise you have are prepared to wear. One of the most off putting things with the jet boats i have experienced is the power delivery, when you first accelerate nothing happens, then it all comes in with a huge rush and tends to stecth your arms. Very hard to teach beginners. Jets dont tend to convey torque very well so the motor relly needs to be rvving for anything to happen. They seem to have no power delivery and a lot of slip down low in the rev range. A lot more than a heavily weight ed proped boat.

Just because boattest.com doesnt mean its a good boat. Out of the 10 or 15 reviews I read, not one boat was rated worse than excellent.

we pick up our new 03 mobius tommrwo and it only cost 27K with a few of the essentials and another few good options. but a jet drive is about 70% as effective in propulsion as a i/o or direct drive boat(v-drive included). the most effective is an outboard motor, just not a real good idea for wakeboarding.

Dont be slammin "Outboard Boy", you put enough big people, beer, cheap amps and low end subs in anything and even a terrible day on the lake is way better than a great day at work!

Anyone that wants a dedicated wakeboard boat knows what they need to buy, and all of the "top 10" throw way sweeter wakes than any of us with outboards, I/O's or jets will ever see. I've gotten over that but am dreaming of the day . . .

That's my opinion but I could be wrong !!!

that salesman could sell ice cubes to eskimos. he fed you crap until you were full. still any boat is better than no boat. just don't tell anyone what you paid. hope its 4 stroke cause 2 strokes are getting banned everywhere for good reason.

I got the boat for more than $4000 off MSRP. The salesman didnt even show me the boat because I wasnt looking for a wakeboarding boat. I was looking for a runabout for general use, I mentioned putting a tower on one of the boats and he showed me the Challenger X. I fell in love with the boat. It looks so fun to drive that I will have to pry myself out of the seat to ride.
Anyway I havent even gotten to take it out yet, so I will not agree or diagree with you untill I drive it this weekend.
