I'll bet the Panasonic booth at NAB is just a circus. Well it serves Sony right, they've been the technology leaders forever but have sat on features like this cam has to protect their high end equipment. Panny will rule this market for years by introducing a product like this now (the same way Canon is right now with digital SLR's).

My thoughts:

The camera is worth every penny even if you don't record in HD as the quality of DVC PRO 50 is unbelievable. (and may make more sense to use since your average NLE - Mac anyway - can more easily handle it storage wise)

4:2:2 color sampling with no mpeg artifacts means beautiful film like color. Variable rate recording means perfect slo-motion and time remaps.

Need an expensive video deck to edit with? Not anymore, just get your self a card reader - no more sitting there for hours digitizing footage, just copy it all off the card and start editing.

Yah, Panny will rape us on the P2 cards and card reader for a while because they can, but it's always costs you to be the first on the block to have the latest technology.

HDV isn't even "last month" - it's now been relegated to a complete consumer format. Sony might as well stick it in their under a grand 1 chip cams because that's the only market they will be able to sell it to soon.

not only that.. but what about the video capture buffer when using the P2 cards... how cool is that?

And wooo hooo a 13x optical zoom. just 1 x more than the Sony...

Anyone want to buy a DVX100a in Sept '05...?

what is great is all the companies that rushed out and bought a Z1u. they are all going to be kicking themselves.

p2 cards are like 800 bucks for a 4 gig one...that is a lot. especialy since you will want atleast 2 of them.

If you buy this camera you are going to also be purchasing at least a one terrabite drive. no more shoe boxes of dv tapes to back up old footage. so thats another like 800 i belive.

True fact that your costs are only going to go up with this camera, but your work will look so much better and like all technology, it only gets cheaper with time.

supposivly you can transfer recorded media from a P2 card strait to a hard drive with out the need for a computer. if this is so. its still gonna be annoying to have to stop and transfer stuff every 6 or so minutes. or 12 if you have 2 cards. and it takes a good like 5 minutes to transfer 7 gb's

they claim by 2007 they will have 128gb p2 cards.

its cheap HD...but not consumer (HDV/DVCAM/DV) cheap.

i can totaly see p2 catching on.

JVC has the HD with interchangeable lens's, but only 24p..or 30p?....Panasonic has no interchangable lens..but is 4p-60p, if canon is smart and adapts p2 technology and comes out with a fully Progressive with interchangeable lens camera, they will rule the pro-sumer market once again

Wow a 128 gig card would be good for 2 hours of 100 mbs HD.

Was anyone at NAB when the cam was introduced? Evidently it was intro'd at the Apple booth, the head of Panasonic walked out with it and just held it up over his head - I guess the place just went beserk.

The fun part going to be trying to buy one of these when they first come out - it'll be full retail for a while.

I saw a report somewhere recently that sales of the fx1 have been lackluster in the US. Doesn't surprise me, the Japanese have been doing HD way longer then us and had been dying for a home movie HD camcorder. Here it's only going to appeal to pros and a few well heeled amatuers.
