|
| I am having a problem with a hs 360. I cannot seem to make my handle pass. It feels like as soon as I try to initiate the spin the boats pull over powers my arm and I don’t have the strength to pull it to the small of my back. This then pulls me off axis and into a usually painful crash. I consider myself in shape as much as any other person ive seen doing handle passes. Is this probably an issue with my mechanics or is it an issue of strength? Do those of you that have handle pass spins down feel like they put a large amount of stress on you when making the pass?

| It is all mechanics of the trick it takes very little strength. It sounds like you are spinning off the wake. You want to pop off the wake and once well off the wake pull the handle towards your rear hip into the small of your back. This way all you need to do is grab the handle and you will spin the rest of the way around. If you don't pop and pull the handle in then you will never advance on the boat and the handle will seem impossible to grab. Remember it is the handle that initiates the spin not you.

| thanks alot that gives me a renewed confidence. I figured it was notan issue of strength. You are right i have been going into the spin of the wake. I just feel like the whole process of being in the air is so quick I have to get it going. I guess i need to train myself to be paitent then initiate. Thanks again

| no problem, a good way to get the whole waiting then pulling the handle concept is to do it on a trampoline and tie a rope off to a tree or anything solid.

Pull hard with BOTH hands and try to pass the handle below your waist (right under your butt). Bend your knees in the air and stay pretty crouched throughout the spin.
Good luck.

| It's all about cheating bro. If you start with your hands in tight it will be incredibly easy to make the pass. you gotta have your elbows locked at your side & the handle only a couple inches off of your belly.

| mechanics. im really small, and i had the same thoughts as you wehn i was learning them. But heres a suggestion that makes handle passes a LOT easier. Grab a board without molded fins, take the fins off it, and take it for a ride. Once you up and stable, just cruise arouind, doing butter 3's, backside and frontside. Its actually alot of fun once you get the hang of it, and it makes you realize what you are doing wrong on your handle passes. Thats how i learned the "baller bs 180" and such.

| i suggest if you have a large handle to not have your hands all the way out. try and keep them more to the middle, it makes handle pass's on all tricks easier becuase if you hold on at the outside of the handle it angles away from your body. learned that one from a pro. you will see what im talking about when you try it. it made a huge difference for me.[/quote]

I had the same problem reaching the handle, the boat would pull me off axis and the landings hurt like hell. Solved it by going flat at the wake. This meant there was alot less line tension and made the rope pullable.
I was trying 3's with back roll progressive edge. The load and release edge made the rope unreachable at first but you'll need it for o/a spins.

Thats interesting. I always approach the wake with my "passing hand" positioned as far out to the edge of the handle as possible. That way, when I pass the handle behind my back, the other side of the handle is closer to the other side of my body and my other hand. I kinda twist the handle as I pass it. Does that make sense? It's always seemed easier this way to me, and I land my 3's very consistantly. I'm not saying you're wrong at all though. I may actually try your tip this weekend and see if it's any easier.
Another thing you might try is bending your knees a bit and trying to pass the handle behind/under your butt. It's a little bit less of a reach on the pass, you tend to pop up a bit higher for some reason, and it adds a bit of flair to the trick. If you learn it this way, progressing to an OA 3 is easier too.

Stephan, Not true at all. You want to go into the jump with your arms extended. When you yank, it will pull you through an effortless spin. With your arms bent that causes you to muscle it. Jump, Pull forward, spin.

Good tips guys...thanks. I tried 2 w2w 3's at end of last year, and was spinning of wake. I was attacking it all wrong.

| aev, pull the rope back with 2 hands past your back hip. you want to have 2 hands on the handle for as long as possible, so bring it around as far as you can in 2 hands then pass it fats and land, edging away from the wake.

Sorry Roundbaywakeboard, but I completely disagree with you. The following is a link to a video made by Joe Umali (jumalian), I'm the guy w/ the silver vest & red CWB Absolute. In it I do a couple HS 5's and a nice HS Nose grab 3. If you guys happen to check it out, notice where my elbows are. I am locked and waiting to pop. When I do explode up see how I basically pop right to where the handle is for the pass. It's especially clear on the 3 where i use the extra time to do a nice long nose grab. Think about it, if you have the handle way out then you have to cover that much more distance just to get it into your front hand & that's how people get pulled over on their backs. Notice how on the 5's I do pull with both hands. Tell me what ya think, it seems to work well for me.

Stephan, It works, yeah, but its more efficient if you go into it with extended arms and then do the pull. What youre doing is working, yes, but you are constantly muscling it. When you pull, it sets you into a spin and you simply pass the handle and go for the ride. It's all about using your momentum to your advantage. When you progress to bigger spins, you're going to find that your bent arms will be a hinder on you.

I agree with Stephan, keeping your arms in is the right way to spin. It's not like you have to pull that hard to spin. And even when i do bigger spins, i keep the handle close to me when i am edging into the wake. Plus, how are you supposed to grab your spin if your hands are way out when you hit the wake. Then, you're just fighting the boat. Arms in!

| I agree with roundbaywakeboard, I keep my arms out and pull the handle in to spin - it takes less effort and it initiates the spin. If I kept my arms locked in like a h/s front it would throw my balance off. You just have to yank it to the opposite hip and the handle will be right there.

I find it's easier to keep my arms in on spins. It doesn't take that much momentum to start the spin and the handle is just that much closer if you keep it by your trailing hip.

| Follow up question here. When are you supposed to start pulling the handle in? Late ? or as soon as you are off the wake?

I wait till I'm at the peak of my jump so I POP and right at the point of weightlessness I pull.
I do this a little faster when going for the grab by taking my hand off before I actually get to the peak.
For the first few times just focus on not spinning the trick and pulling with both hands when you are in the air you can work out the timing and clean it up after.

I forgot to add, remember this is a HANDLE PASS trick!
You can spin all you want but if you don't pass the handle you are never going to land it.

Well everyone seems to have their own oppinion on this trick, but from what i have learned is to first make a wide cut. Come in with the handle right at your front hip. Pop and then wait until u are in the air then initiate the spin. Since you keep the handle in close to your hip its right there, allowing you to make the pass easy. Thats what works for me.

finally I'm getting oh so close to the 360! I don't even know how it all started .....almost shocked that I landed with the handle and facing the boat , then pfft!!! handle pops out. did it like 10 more times getting the handle pass and all but can't seem to ride out of it.
My question is: after the handle pass and the rotation, should you have both hands back on the handle? Or is your lead hand on the handle good enough position??? thanks in advance!
