Towards the end of the 2004 season I started trying air raleys, but find that I either get good height and bad position or bad height and good position, because of this, I have yet to land one. Also when I get good height, my board goes to far back, and ends up with me rotating into some type of ugly invert.

How do I get a clean and easy take off which will give me the height, and then how do I keep it smooth and controlled in the air?

It sounds to me like your letting off your edge or going to early if you keep a good progressive edge it should put you into the raley position without you having to do n e thing but pull yourself back in and ride away peace

For height, be sure you stay on your edge the entire time, all the way through the wake. For problems like rotating, make sure you keep your shoulders straight and look at the back of the boat when you get into the air. If you drop a shoulder or turn your head you will rotate funky and usually crash.

Raleys are really not that hard to do, but they are also not that hard to screw up. Be patient, and really bad attention to your fundamentals. Practice by doing as big of a grab (nose maybe) into the flats, working on the progressive edge all the way through the wake, and keeping the handle at your waist.

Let us know how it goes.

Luke

P.S. if you can't do backrolls, don't try Raleys.

you can try learning them on the wakeskate. Thats how i learned mine. Basically it is the same thing except when you release off the wake you board flys behind you and you pull back down to go feet first into the water. It allows you to get comfortable learning the trick and helps alot when you strap on the board.....

I think as some other said, the height is an edging issue, if you lose your progressive edge, your heigth is gone, and you wont have the "snap" that throws your legs back under you...

Yes, but you have to let your legs float out. It's hard to explain how your legs fload back. The wake does all of the work for the first half (untill you have to pull your legs back in and land). On a normal wake jump, you hold your legs under you, but on a raley you just let them float backwards.

I also learned mine on a wakeskate. SO MUCH less painful that way. Once you get the rotation on a wakeskate, it is very similar on a wakeboard.
