Has anybody changed the steering cable in a 1996 Elite? I need to know the length and if it is a rotory steering system or what.

It's most likely a rotary system. I just changed mine (on a Tige) today. If, under the dash, the cable goes in on the bottom of the helm and comes out on the top after making a half circle through the helm you have a rotary system.

The best way to get the right cable is take the old one out and measure it. I ordered a cable last summer and finally tried to put it in a couple of weeks ago and it was the wrong one. If your old cable is a Morse brand cable you will need to find a Teleflex-Morse cross reference chart as Morse is no longer in business. You can try to call your Centurion dealer or the factory and see if they can get you the right cable, but don't count on them. After the new cable didnt fit my boat Tige tried to sell me a whole new steering system to fit the wrong cable because they said I couldn't get a replacement cable. If you can get your old cable out I can help you find the right cable from there if you need me too.

Also, if you have a rotary system like mine you just have to take out the two bolts where the cable enters and exits the helm and turn the wheel to get that part out. At the back there's probably one large nut and a pin holding it to the rudder.

I will be replacing my steering cable next week in my '00 Elite V.
I simply called Fiineline and asked them what the length was. They also will sell you one. FYI they told me mine is 18 feet.

Good luck

The dealer around said he had no idea, so I called another centurian dealer and they said that the cable changes every other year so I'll have to pull it out and check.
