Has anyone actually heard the defcon V's in person? And, has anyone seen an x2 with JL w7's of any size ? If you know anything about the defcons, I have an almost new MTX 942 amp and wanted to know if it would push those expensive ass muthas... Any help would be helpful. Thanks. Holla.

you could run a 12 or 13 w7 but if you got a 12 w7 i wouldnt reccomend turning it up to loud, also your amp puts out 940 watts at 1 ohm bridged

maybe you could sell that MTX amp and get something that pushes a little more power. Just an idea. Lata.

hey wakedude, are you saying I need more than 940 watts ? Would it not push one 13W7? It's pushing two 10W3's in my truck right now. I bought a new truck and need to take out my equipment. I have a Kenwood cephalon (or something close to that....lol) DVD in dash radio. Hell, I don't know, I am a 32 year-old fireman who wanted to go back to a system from "back in the day" high school days...LOL Any help is appreciated. Bottom Line is this: I am picking up my new 2005 X2 in two days and it has no tower speakers. It only has factory JL stuff. I am assuming it needs more amps for that stuff, and I have about 2500 to spend. I wanted some rockin' tower speakers and want it to thump the water. How much will I need to invest to achieve such "thump" ? Is it even possible? My system in the 01 Launch I traded in sucked. I always said I wanted to rock when I bought my new boat. Help a brotha out.

I just added a pair of deafcon Vs to my 04 prostar 205v which is equipped with the same tower as the 04 x2. The speakers would not fit in the normal mount location (under the tower). The supports that run fore-aft on the top of the tower do not allow the speakers to be mounted close enough to the centerline of the boat so that they can hang in the proper position (the aftmost main tube cuts the corners in such a way that when you put the speakers under they point towards the sky at about a 45 degree angle). We went ahead and mounted them on the top of the tower; most of the people that ride on the boat are over 6' so it made sense to keep the headroom. They work fine in this position.

As for an amplifier, I am running the tru technology amp that is for sale on wakeside, I believe it's rated at 300watts rms per channel. Anyway, the speakers sound excellent. You can hear them loud and clear behind the boat. I have had comments from every person who has been near us on the volume of the speakers. When we pass people standing on the shore.. most of them start dancing as we cruise by (totally true!).

When we first installed them, they were hooked up to the factory system rear channel rca jacks; we didn't have a fader. Big mistake, on the stock system, you cannot crank these bad boys up to their potential without getting some serious distortion in the hull speakers. We went ahead and added a mid range 2 channel amp to power the hull speakers; we ran that off the front rca jacks in order to be able to fade. This is our current system configuration and I could not be happier.

Now for the one bad issue that I must mention. Yesterday was the 4th day we had the speakers out on the water. At some point in the day we noticed a little bit of distortion comming from one of the midbass drivers on one of the speakers. Upon inspection, the cone has a 3.5" crack about 1.5" from the middle of the cone; it sounds like crap. I am going to call wakeside/skylon and find out what I need to do to get this taken care of. I'm not too thrilled about having to ship this beast back (they werent exactly the easiest things in the world to hold up to the tower and mount) and being without the speaker for a few weeks, espically at the beginning of the riding season, is not exactly ideal. I am also in south florida, it's not exactly in super cold temperatures that might cause the cones to become brittle and crack. This defintely shouldn't happen with a set of $1600 speakers. Anyway, I will post an update about their customer service or whatnot as soon as I get a chance to talk to them.

Other than that, I am 100% satisfied with the performance of the Vs and would definitely recommend them. If you are in south florida (fort lauderdale) you are more than welcome to come have a listen. If you want pics of what they look like mounted on top of an x2 tower let me know; I will take some pics.

David

It would push the one W7 fine, but for some reason i thought you meant 2 of them. My bad. I had 2 JL 12w3v2s in my boat and they slammed (until they got stolen and i had to replace them with something else). Actually, i'd recommend having 2 of those instead of one W7 because in a boat, the bass will be more present near the subwoofer, so spreading subs out will give you more sound throughout the boat. Plus, that might be the cheaper option as well. My boat definitely "thumps the water" and it wasn't really all that expensive, so check out the 12 W3s. As for tower speakers, you should still have enough money left after those subs to buy some MBQuart speakers by Boss Accessories. They are awesome, that's pretty much the setup i have in my Malibu, and i guarantee you would be happy with it.

Need more than 940 watts at 1 ohm to power the W7, there 3 ohm subs!

Grant runs the 2400 watt amp in his setup, but because W7's are 3 ohm it only gets about 1600 watts. 1 amp, 1 W7.

if you really want some thump i would suggest some brahmas from www.adireaudio.com these are the best subs on the market. there also cheaper alot cheaper then W7's. I would also look into getting a nice box that fits the specs of the sub that you get. No matter what sub you get it will sound nice in a well thought out and properly designed box

Thanks. I actually have decided against the W7's as of today. The guys who put my system in my truck said the more the better on a boat because you would never be able to appreciate the W7 quality. They said kind of what wakedude said about spreading them out. I've got two JL w3 10's from my truck that I could probably find a place for. I may mix it up a little. As far as the ohm thing, I have no idea. Bare with me. I'll take pics and update on sound and equipment later this week after I decide and have it installed. I appreciate the info fellas. Supposed to be 90 degrees here in dallas on saturday. Das what i'm talkin' about !
