I WANT TO WAKE AND SKI DO I , BUY A BAYLINER 175 XT WITH 3 LITRE 130 HP ENGINE OR BAYLINER 195 WITH 4.3 LITRE 220 HP ENGINE MY ONLY WORRY WITH SECOND OPTION IS FUEL CONSUMPTION ! YOUR COMMENTS WOULD BE APPRECIATED

are they new?.......I would try and get an older ski boat or maybe a nicer i/o, but tell the price range and features you want.....

just a boat for ski,wakeboarding but not having to throttle up constantly when a skier ect , pulls a bit on the rope as for price £15k or less

No substitute for horsepower. I would do the 195 w 220 HP. With a few people in the boat, even with a 4 blade stainless on the 130 HP.....I assume you will be dragging forever to get up to speed. My old boat, a Cobalt 190 with a 4.3 205 HP did a fine job, but I would be concerned about anything with less HP.

As far as fuel consumption, I don't think you will have a huge noticable difference between the two. Of course I could be WAY off on that. 2' bigger boat, 60% more HP. I know my 4.3 would run forever on a tank of gas.

pilot_tallboy, All my experiance with a 3.0 litre on anything over 17feet has been negative, 130hp after some fuel, people and gear is not enough. you'll be struggling to get on plane easily without a rider behind.

I'd look for a minimum of the 4.3 carb'd engine with 190 at the prop. this is the engine in between the 2 you have mentioned.

The second boat you mention has 220 and is a 4.3; this engine is an MPI therefore could be argued to be far more efficient then a carburetted engine. also quite a price leap as well. about $5k i belive...

To be honest theres no comparison in these boats. that latter is far superior....

there is also a 185 in between. I have the 185 with the 190hp 4.3l and it works great. I am not sure if I would go much less then that. The amount of hp you are gaining from going with the larger boat, you are also pushing a larger boat with it... does that make sense? Your best bet though is test drive both... If you are tall, you probally will not like driving the 175, I am 72inches tall, and had a very hard time sitting behind the steering wheel.

Otherwise the quality of bayliners are good for what you are paying! I think the base 175 can be bought for 9,995.00 us brand new!

gmarkham1, Totally agreed. they are pric epoint boats but you get a hell of a lot for the money considering....

Thanks for the reply's looks like the 4.3 mpi boat for me, i do wonder how the bayliner 175 xt manages to sell if so under powred but hey once you bought it your stuck with it. Good forum i will tell you of my findings when i get the boat . ps... i am in the uk where fuel is expensive thats how i worry about the big engine !

I would also look at some older inboards too. Most of them you can load up for an awsome wakeboard wake, and then empty for ski. Just somehting to think about. Inboards are very nice

A smaller engine driven hard will use roughly the same or even more fuel than a large engine driven more leisurely. As others have said, there's no substitute for horsepower. You can always back-off on the throttle if needs be but you can't invent horses.

Why do underpowered boats sell? 'Cos many first time buyers don't appreciate the significance of being underpowered until they experience it on their new purchase. And by then, of course, it's too late.

I'm also with you on the UK fuel price. Note how it's now more expensive than when we had the fuel protest a couple of years ago Crying or Very sad

And what's happening now? Zilch.

A friend of mine had a boat with a 4 cylinder and it was real slow, another had the V6 4.3 and he would pull tubes and boarders all weekend and only use apx 1 tank of fuel, I would strongly sugest the V6 4.3 liter

I'd buy an older ski boat with a good shape hull so you can get a good wake if you want and a no wake for the ski day. an old nautique 2001 hull would be the best.

You are tryn to go from one extreme to the other, even the new boats designed specifically to do this are not all that good at it. IMO
