Anyone know of a good and easy application to convert DVD's to Mpeg or AVI file format? Freeware would be best. Thanks.

DVD is MPEG....are you just trying to pull from a DVD to your computer?

If so, the program that I used was ArcSoft DVD creator - and I captured the video from a DVD that I had made previously. I got this software with my burner.

garveyj, actually they are VBO files and the audio is streamed separately. I need an application that will pull down the files together and convert them at the same time. Size doesn’t matter I have an encrypter that I can make them smaller.

You want to separate the mpeg resource from the completed DVD? Can you do that? I'm not aware of any software that does that since it's technically against the law. (the rational being if it was your work you'd have the source files) Of course that doesn't mean there isn't something out there that will but I haven't heard of it. I know what Garveyj is mentioning is possible but that's not pulling the original mpeg off the DVD. Besides the original mpeg has no audio track.

Well a VBO file is what is put on a DVD - it is the files that the DVD player uses, although it is in MPEG format. Although it looks like the audio is seperate from the Video, it is still put together...It is just the file system of the DVD.

Thor_717, If you want - I would be happy to let you have a copy of that ArcSoft software that I have - I know it is not fully functional, but it will do what you want.

garveyj, that would be great. And if their is anything I can send your way I would be more than happy to.

I guess I should also state what I am trying to do. I have a new Dell x50v PDA. (624mhz) and I have 2 gig of memory on it. I would like to convert/copy(what ever) DVD's from my library to my pda. Maybe rip them down to 300-500 megs a piece.

This site has tons of info on how to do what you want. There are specific programs that will allow you to turn dvd's into small enough files for your pda. The one I linked is the resource that I've been sent to multiple times.

What kind of file formats do these programs convert the DVD content to? and is this done during playback or is it just a straight file transcode?

There is a freeware program out there called DVD audio ripper, but it will only let you copy 5 minutes at a time unless you have paid for the program ($30). You can find it by typing it into google.
