|
|
Ok read a article in a boating magazine, and the article starts out a salesman takes out a prospective buyer. The buyer pumps the throttle . Multiple times turning the key. Holds the throttle open after boat starts.
The main point that he brought up that was that when someone pumps the throttle before starting or stoping the motor it drops gas all over the cylinders. When this happens it's like throwing sand in your cylinders, because all that gas washes off the oil . The damage can happen when your trying to start it and there is no lubercation left on cylinders.
Any tips on proper starting technique?? |

| With a fuel inejcted engine you definetly dont need to pump it. |

From all the different dealers and mechanics that I have worked with this is pretty much how they recommend starting an outboard motor: First squeeze the primer bulb until it is firm, lift your warm up or fast idle lever about half way. Push in the key to choke the motor and turn the key to crank the motor in short bursts say 7-10 seconds. Cranking for extended time periods can damage the starter. Once the motor starts use the fast idle to maintain about 1500 RPMs until the motor is nearing operating temp.
Now this is slightly different for I/O's, you need to turn your blower on for like 15 to 20 seconds before starting and some other slight differences, and each motor will have it's own little things that will help, but the principle is the same.
Good luck |

they say 5 minutes of blower but like 2 does the job..............i am not liable for accidents related to under use of blower _________________ R.I.P. M. Legge

The starting technique varies from engine to engine. I know for my Johnson it is rev the enginewhile running the starter then back it off and try it again and it starts every time.
I dont think that gas will wakh oil off, I mean they both start off the same.
Finally, running the blower has absolutly nothing to do with the engine starting, that is to get the gas fumes out of the bilge.

Oil doesnt come to the top part of the cylinder unless its a 2 stroke., what happens is when you start the engine the first cylinder to fire will have a mixture of gas coating the walls...it will ignite prematurely on the compression stroke, because of the extreme heat generated when compression air.. causing a double shot......blah blah blah.....its just really hard on the bottom end of the engine.
on the pistion you have rings....there is one called a scraper ring that is above the skirt....that removes oil from the cylinder walls...on the down stroke. reason is....the bottom of the piston (called a skirt) is what really only touches the cylinder sleeve. so when the crank throws oil on the bottom of the piston it gets it lube...when it comes back down it cleans the walls.
your talking like 0.0002" (two ten thousands) smaller then a strand of hair, clearence between the wall and piston.
On a 2 stroke engine, air gas and oil are all burned...check it out... pretty cool http://science.howstuffworks.com/two-stroke2.htm
if you dont have a 2 stroke engine then all that would apply. |

| If you've got oil in on your cylinder walls above the piston on a 4-stroke, you won't be boatin' much longer and you'll have horrible blow-by. Not to mention a cloud of blue smoke. |

If anyone ever had another question similar to this you might want to try the website: http://www.marineengine.com/cgi-bin/discus/discus.cgi
They have discussion boards there and several intelligent mechanics that specialize in marine applications. |

Wakeborda918, because a has 4 different stages Intake, Compression, Power, Exhaust.
your gas and air are injected for you.
Question: how is that 115 4stroke...I hear they are gutless but wanted to find out from an owner...they now Supercharge them

well...i absolutely love the 115 4stroke...but...they now have the new line of engines called 'verados' and they range from 200, 225, 250, and 275...they are all 4-stroke and [those] are the engines that are supercharged...i have heard nothing but good things about those engines and they are almost as quiet as if they were turned 'off' _________________ Women......can't live with 'em...can't shoot 'em.. |

ok, before i say anything, i openly admit that i don't know much about engines, so don't say im trying to sound smart. lol.
Any Way, putting the boat in the water for the first time of the season i usually have to pump the throtle lots and keep it open to have the moter turn over. After its been started, it usually does good throughout the season. Just some times i have trouble and have to pump the throtle. So are you saying that is a Bad thing that im pumping the throtle?? And another thing!! Ok, say my friend falls down wakeboarding, i turn around and go get him, and he is done wakeboarding. I put it in neutral or w/e (idle) and turn off the key. Sometimes it will like shut off werid, like its coughing and like it will sound like its dying down, when really i turned the key off. Problem or what goin on?? The funny thing tho is it will cough and if i turn the key back on, then it will run again, with out using the igniton system. thanx for any info!! _________________ I Came To Bring The Pain |

Hmm...in my opinion. The ignition problem would have to do with the key tumblers, or even a bad ground could cause that. If you have an handyman kind of knowledge, just take it apart making sure, everything moves freely in the tumbler/unit ..that any electrical connections in the unit are not corroded, no broken wires...etc etc.
As far as the continious run on when you turn the key off, that is "dieseling", usually that has something to with the timing being to advanced. fouled spark plugs is another possibility.
if you can remove a plug, borrow a spark plug gap tool and check that.
Wakeborda918, I saw a 200 down at the boat show, IT IS MASSIVE!!!! |

| Sometimes when an engine runs on or is "dieseling" it's because the spark plugs are too hot or the whole engine is real hot or a number of things. I'd imagine the reason it'll keep going if you turn the key back to "on" after it has been stumbling is because in essence the motor is still running, kind of like how a diesel motor runs with only compression and heat after it's warmed up. Gas isn't quite as combustible so it doesn't do that unless there's way too much heat from a really hot spark plug or too much compression or something. I'm guessing your motor has a carb not fuel injected? |

yeah, thats probally why it is "diseling"...and sry, as i said i don't know lots about moters..so i have no clue what the difference is between a carb and fuel injected ( im assuming by "carb" you mean carborator?) thanx for the input _________________ I Came To Bring The Pain |
