hey, watchin the daytona 500 (nascar race, for those who don't know what that is) got me thinking...when i was at that track, they had a lake in the middle of it big enough to wakeboard in...Has anyone heard of wakeboarding in the Daytona speed way?? just wondering, because it would be sweet to do! especially during a race Laughing

Yeah, it happens all the time......

Not really, that probably wouldn't be the most cost effective place to put a lake.

Actually, when i was there, they told me that they had to dig dirt out of the middle to build the high degree bankings on the turns on the track...so they were left with a big hole in middle and decided to make it a lake...so maybe it didnt cost as much as it could of costed.

Never knew that it was that big. I would wakeboard there, cause no one else would though during the race it might cause a distraction when the drivers look at my nice skills Cool

On 2 separate days, I saw someone slalom skiing so it is possible but I never saw anyone riding. It looked pretty choppy though.

It would only be choppy if alot of boats were out there...Other than that with the high banked corners they have it would be a good way to kill the wind

Here is a little blurb that I found about the lake (Lake Lloyd at Daytona):

While you might be able to bring the old Lazy Boy (husband or chair, your choice) out to the facility with the lake in the center, you can't bring a boat or a fishing pole. Talley 'filled us in' on what is planned for Lake Lloyd, the body of water that fronts the back straight.

"We filled in one-third of Lake Lloyd and will offer premium parking along the banks. We made it kind of a beach atmosphere. Fans can see water shows, and ski shows and play volleyball along the shore. That is all new and we are very excited to be utilizing Lake Lloyd as we really did not use it in the past. You will see piers that go out into the water. People who use that parking area will also have the use of a community center located right by the water. There they can go in and check their internet and email, or play pool or ping pong or get a bite to eat.

"If you look at the lake from the start finish line, we filled in one third, from front to back. We never really took advantage of it before. Fans won't be able to actually go into the lake itself however."

I was at the 300 on Saturday and they were sking and wakeboarding during the entire race. From the bleachers I could not see who was wakeboarding and sking but I could tell they were all pros based on the tricks and jumping they were doing. I spent more time watching them then the actual race. I'm not a Nascar fan but free tickets are free tickets. On the lake there was a Ski Nautique, a MC 209 w/ Tower, a Mobious w/ tower, and a Tige Switch.

It was pretty windy Saturday and the lake conditions were still ideal.

The past 3 weekends the WorldWaterSkiPros.com has arranged a "tournament" for some professional water skis to promote the water sports industry during the Daytona Speed Weeks. The reason this was done was figuring 200,000 people would get to see another sport with very high speeds and possibly crashes. In reality, this was not a tournament, but more of an exhibition.

WorldWaterSkiPros and USA Waterski had Phillip Soven there to promote the sport of wakeboarding.

Here's the press release:
World Waterski Pros LLC (WWSP) announces the Water Ski Daytona special has been extended throughout all of Speedweeks. Daytona International Speedway, in Daytona Beach, Florida, will host 7 different races from February 5 to February 20, totaling over half a million people attending. The water ski action on Lake Lloyd, including slalom, jump, and shortboard, will continue to be another source of entertainment for speedway fans. Daytona International Speedway has completed a 5-month renovation of the infield, including Lake Lloyd, the 29-acre lake along the backstretch. The new design is an interactive, fan friendly area. Speedweeks will mark the first time waterskiing, a high speed and demanding sport, has been on the infield lake. Professional waterskiing will be an infield attraction during The Rolex 24 (Feb. 5-6), Budweiser Shootout (Feb. 12), Bud Pole (Feb. 13), Gatorade Duel at Daytona (Feb. 17), Florida Dodge Dealers 250 (Feb. 1 , Hershey’s Kisses Take 5 300 (Feb. 9), and Daytona 500 (Feb. 20). Pros skiers will hit the water numerous times prior to and during the races, to demonstrate their slalom skills, accelerating from approximately 18 mph to 60 mph and back to 18 mph in under 3 seconds, jumpers fly off the ramp traveling more than 200 feet and short-boarders perform multiple aerial somersaults and mobius flips. WWSP, headquartered in Orlando, Florida, is the leading water ski professional association representing over 120 professional athletes. WWSP is continually striving to promote, develop, encourage and market the sport of waterskiing.
NYC: The Mastercarft Tour stop will bein New York on Father's Day weekend, details to follow.

From what I've heard, the conditions are very choppy (from the wind) as there is absolutely no shelter (tree's, hills, etc.).

Hey, just found this thread. If you want to see some wakeboarding at a NASCAR race, click on this link then click on "Netzero Nascar Weekend" - http://www.alliancewake.com/video/default.aspx

This is the Homestead Miami Speedway. The final race in the Nextel Cup circuit where that Busch guy won the series or whatever. Back in November I was invited to go out there with Cobe Mikacich, Sean O'Brien, photographer Jason Lee and Tony Smith of Alliance to meet up with the Netzero team to ride on the lake and watch the race. It was pretty cool to ride in the middle of a NASCAR track with loud-as-hell cars going around really, really fast. Definitely not your typical day on the lake.
