I figured I'd post this here in addition to the classifieds. I apologize for the cross-post.

I'm switching over to Canon from Nikon, and in the process I'm dumping my Mamiya gear as well. So, everything is for sale. Here's what's available:

(2) Nikon D2h bodies
I have 2 Nikon D2h bodies available. Both are in great condition. One purchased Feb '04, the other May '04. Regularly serviced by NPS. Firmware 2.00 on both. All accessories included in original boxes. $1650 each

Camera is in good shape. Marks are tape residue. Missing cap for cable release port. Small crack on LCD window of film back, does not affect operation. $2100.00

Nikonos V w/35mm/2.5 lens, SB-105 strobe and arm

Nikon MC-30 cable release. No pictures. $30.00

I don't do cashier's checks over the amount of the purchase, so don't try that scam. I reserve the right to back out of a sale if it feels... "sketchy". Items for sale on another board and locally, so if something is actually sold but not marked here as such, my apologies.

Contact studio@islerphoto.com with inquiries.

Thanks!

I was wondering why you would switch over to canon after such an investment in nikon products. I have shot Nikon for a long time and haven't found a reason to switch yet (especially because I'm a poor student and have already invested in the gear). What are you reasons for changing?

I know a lot of folks are replacing their Mamiya gear with the 1DsmkII. You might want to keep some of your Mamiya lenses however, they work great with a Zork PSA on the Canon bodies.

http://www.zoerk.com/pages/p_psa.htm

I have one of these on order to go with a 35mm 645 N.

RD, Thanks for the heads up, I'd never seen that before. Unfortunately, it says "Manual Focus Only" lenses for Mamiya 645 things =(.

Zach M, It's not easy to dump these Nikon things and purchase the Canon equivalent. It's an enormous financial hit. I have a few basic reasons, though:

1. Weather sealing on camera bodies. I've sent in equipment to Nikon 6-7 times in the past 3 years for water damage, when it was minor water on the surface. Not only has this cost me over $2,000 in repairs, but it's caused me a lot of downtime too.

2. Identical camera dimensions between 1DmkII, 1DSmkII, and 1V. I can purchase one housing (Aquatech DV-3), and it will fit all of the Canon cameras I am purchasing. With Nikon, I have two housings, and they fit two specific cameras with two specific lenses.

3. 8/8. By this, I mean 8MP (well, 8.2) at 8 frames per second (well, 8.5). While you can do a great deal with the 4MP files generated by the Nikon, there really is still a big difference between a magazine spread from film, and from my 4MP camera. A few issues of WBM ago, it became painfully obvious. Having that 8MP lets me produce a higher-end product, while still having the speed that I need. Yes, the Nikon D2x will be 12.4MP, but that's at 5fps, which is simply not fast enough.

4. Future potential. Canon, as a company, is 10 times the size of Nikon...probably bigger. They have a much larger R&D budget, and can bring products to market more quickly. People have been talking about the D2x for close to two years, and Nikon has already missed its initial ship date. Canon, on the other hand, brings things to market quickly, and has ample supply when they do ship.

5. Professional support. Nikon has what's called NPS (Nikon Professional Services), and Canon has CPS (Canon Pro Services). These are free to join, and are provided only to working professionals. Their purpose is to turn around repairs very quickly for working pro's, provide loaner gear if a repair takes longer, and provide immediate tech support for problems. Well, Nikon's NPS hasn't been up to the level it should be at. From all that I've gleaned from Canon shooters, CPS is extremely responsive and professional. Also, Canon has a representative that monitors and posts on a few professional photography messageboards. This guy, Chuck Westfall, looks for questions or problems posted about Canon cameras, does all the research he needs for a proper answer, and posts the solution. While this may seem stupid, it just gives me the feeling that Canon cares more about the customer.

It's going to be hard to re-learn the controls that have become second nature since I picked up an F5 in 1999. Also I will have to learn to zoom and focus in the opposite direction. I've been thinking about doing this for months, and finally got the courage together to do it (and also applied for a bank loan to help me).

Oh well.

Canon allocates 35% of their profit by division back into R&D. They started doing their own CMOS development around 2000 because they didn't want to be stuck in bed with Sony (like Nikon is now). They've got a technological lead because of that and it will take all the others a while to catch up. IF CANON doesn't rest on their laurels or someone doesn't come out with a potentially better technology (like the Fovean sensor in the Sigma DSLR) Canon may remain in that position for a good long while.

Mike's situation isn't that uncommon as it seems like everyday I read a post on some forum where a long term Nikon Pro shooter is making the switch. Check out the sidelines at any major sporting event and look at the number of white lenses compared to everything else.

Actually, guys, Mike is lying. He is covering up his real reasons for switching from Nikon to Canon with these long, thought-out, and very well written responses to fool you guys.

I, being the stalwart WB.com citizen that I am, am not a fan of the lying that goes on in these little message boards. So, I'm going to tell you the truth.

Mike is switching to Canon because I shoot Canon.

I hope this helps clarify any confusion you might have had after reading Mike's earlier posts.

Once he switches what the heck will you guys find to argue about?

Garrett Cortese, you weren't supposed to tell anyone that you're my role model.

Now I just need to figure out how the hell to switch focus points as quickly as I could on Nikon.

RD, I'm sure we can think of something. Such as my distaste for Fat Tire beer, which is contrary to Garrett's feelings about it.

I can't believe you don't like Fat Tire beer, Mike. I would think you'd like any beer since it only takes about half of one to get you boozed up.

Seems like alot of stuff to just wakeup and sell off. Man i was pissed when i had to sell my Canon Optura 10 to afford the shipping on my panasonic gs400. Cant imagin how this must feel. I will post this link on several places i chat bout photography and i know their are some nikon people there. Best of luck with ur sales, and the switch. And hey if those nikons are taking up to much space, pass one over here, would love to have a GOOD still camera. But for now i will play with my Nikon FA camera with its nikkor lens Smile.

PimpinD, right on. I've got about 90% of it all sold already, with just one film camera (F90x) and a few lenses left (105mm, 24mm, 1.4x TC). Other than that, it's ALL GONE. Stuff went pretty fast!

Garrett Cortese, I've been building my tolerance in the off-season. I'm up to two beers now, so watch out.

It's nice to see both of the Forum moderators hard at work making sure the rules of this forum are religiously adhered too and the topics remain pure & true to the promotion of a better understanding, and a discussion of, the everchanging world of new technology!

That being said how does Fat Tire stack up against the brands I'm familiar with? (Falstaff, Hamms, Pabst blue ribbon)

At least here I'm not embroiled in a Mac vs PC thread like the one going in at that other site!

Ahhhh, Hamm's.... Heavy Hitter! I haven't had that since this past summer, up in Montana. I don't know where they sell it around here... but it's good stuff.

RD, as volunteer moderators, we can't be on-call 24-7 as naturally we may be passed out laying in a gutter somewhere after an evening of partying and don't have internet access... =)

I'm going to have to side with Garrett on this one....and I'm really happy that I can finally get Fat Tire in California!

Maybe Mike will start to like it after he's been shooting Canon for a while Laughing

Nice, Mike, way to go! As for me, I've found a new kick ass, local micro brew, amber ale out here in Michigan. Bell's. It's good. Really good. I think it's better than Fat Tire. I can't believe I just said that. But, it's true.

RD, to solve your problem:
As a professional wakeboarding photographer for the past few summers, and wanting to continue the upstanding tradition of informative content being posted here in the Media & Tech section of the WB.com forums, I've found there is one thing that can significantly improve your shooting skills, as well as allow you to have a very fun time with those whom you are seeing through your viewfinder. Generic, caffeine-free soda.

In case you don't believe me, I've attached a photograph taken by none other than our very own Mike Isler. The subjects of this photograph are both involved in the wakeboarding industry in some way or another. The location of this photograph is the Nugget in Reno, also known as the "Biggest Little City in the World." You should check it out sometime. Anyways, as you can probably tell, both the subjects of this photo and the photographer himself had been having a pretty sweet time that night. And, obviously, the quality of the photograph is undeniable. So, that just goes to show you that I'm telling the truth. Generic, caffeine-free soda, while consumed in mass quantities in short time spans, improves your photography and shoots the "fun meter" off the charts. Just ask Mike...

RD, I appologize I started that mac pc debate on the other site by accident. I just asked a simple question about how powerful of a computer I needed to buy. Oh yeah my vote is for the fat tire. Can't get it here though Puppy Eyes

You asked for a computer recommendation, and someone suggested a Mac. The next two posts just bashed the Mac rather then suggesting a comparable PC. It all went downhill from there . . .

At least when Mike and Garrett used to do the Canon vs Nikon thing it was good natured!

Let's just say this: stealth walking is a sweet activity to go along with mass consumption of generic, caffeine-free soda.

I believe the Stealth walk was derived by the great Cortese himself... it's a rather interesting concept actually. If I could just hand over the mic to Mr. Cortese, I am sure he will not mind explaining how the concept came along. Mr. Cortese, please take the mic...

Ahhh, the stealth walk. Such fun, such excitement, such uber coolness. I don't even know where to begin when it comes to retelling the glorious story that is the history of the stealth walk. Actually, to be perfectly honest, I don't know where I learned the phenomena of walking stealthily, probably because of the fact that the only time I've done it I've also been highly under the influence of generic, caffeine-free soda.

Anyways, in an attempt to make a long, lame story a bit less long, I'll just recount the sweetness that was stealth walking at the Nugget during the Reno PWT stop. After several generic, caffeine-free sodas, and then several more, Mr. Poonjab and myself were goofing around just having some fun as we walked around the slot machines and stuff. Earlier, we had been running and sliding down the banisters until security intervened. Arun tried to keep running, but I, being the good citizen that I am and now knowing that Nugget security did not approve of the occasional sprinting wakeboarder, shouted, "ARUN! NO RUNNING!" every time he did it. Since we couldn't run anymore, I told Arun about the art of stealth walking. Basically, you just take big, long strides in a slow motion sorta way (or at least it feels slow motion thanks to the generic, caffeine-free soda), and you bob your head up and down, and look all around you as if you're on the lookout for something. You weave in and out of the rows and rows of slot machines, sneak up on the haggard old ladies who know nothing in life except for the bucket of quarters in their lap, the lever on the machine, and the scotch on the rocks in the cup holder. You poke your head around corners, making it seem like you're on a recon mission or something, 'cause you're super stealthy and stuff, but knowing that the little old ladies can see you and are thinking to themselves, "What the hell is that jackass doing?" And that's basically stealth walking. Bobbing around like an idiot so other people look at you and think "What the hell is that jackass doing," and so your friends will laugh at you, therefore boosting your self esteem just a touch. Of course, my self esteem plummeted soon after the super sweet stealth walking sessions because I managed to walk into a full length mirror on the dance floor. Straight into it. I thought the guy walking at me just coincidentally had the same hat on, and I tried to pass him. No joke, I didn't think it was me. Seriously, though, who puts a full length mirror at the end of the dance floor just to make it look deceptively bigger? Honestly, I mean, come on. I sure was deceived by it... thought the room just kept going. Nope, it didn't. Just a wall with a mirror on it. Stupid generic, caffeine-free soda...

So, anyways, that's stealth walking. One of the best activities to participate in when consuming generic, caffeine-free soda in mass quantities. Just ask Arun. And watch out for full length mirrors in dimly lit areas.

There you have it... straight from the source. I was thinking.............................. as I so often do, and well, maybe it would be a good idea if we start Stealth Running! Just a thought... although there is a possibility that the combination of mass quantities of Generic Caffeine Free Soda and Stealth Running may just cause the Generic Caffeine Free Soda to switch into reverse and go out the same way that it came in. Other than that... it's a great idea, don't you think? Also, if the location in which the consumption of Generic Caffeine Free Soda has any mirrors, we can ask management at the hotel/casino to take them down for just one night.
