CNN says it was just a target of opportunity. Reports that key political people were in the bunker so they wanted to strike before things changed. Not the start but a preview?

o well. saddam probalby knows he's screwed. i have no idea what's going through his head. he's probably really dumb strategically. he's taking his untrained men against one of the most powerful military forces that ever massed. right now i'm thinking he's either really stupid (most likely) or really genius. who knows what he might have up his sleeve or who he has in our countries

Man I have been eyeing this sh#% all day, this is nuts.

The first report of action was a 'massive firefight', which ended up being our Special Ops taking out all threats at the main port. They have probably been there a while but they made their presence known around mid-day EST. They went in first for recon, then to take out initial ground threats and then to mark ground targets. Think they are bad-asses?? Then dozens of tomahawk missles and 16+ guided bombs from F117's rocked a big list of military targets. They may take out some political buildings and bunkers and such but they are mainly going for stuff like air defense, communication, runways, etc.. to completely impair the Iraqi army. Lots of iraqi defense has been taken out, and there has been a lot of unconfirmed Iraqi casualties. CNN was just talking about the "3000+ cruise missles that will be deployed". And we are deploying more F14's and bombers right now (12:00am EST). Hoooly goodness this will be ugly.

A lot of bombs to get one guy.

It's a very sad day for the people of Iraq.

Let's hope this was the right choice.

Readers Digest Version, because the full story is extremly long and complicated.

We are eliminating an aggressive dictator who has sought and gained weapons of mass destruction. The United States has tried to take the diplomatic approach through the UN. The first Gulf War was ended with the contingency that Iraq would eliminate certain weapons from it's arsenal. Iraq did not live up to it's agreement created by the UN and the cease fire terms of the Gulf War. Several diplomatic resolutions were not enforced by the UN, so the United States has stepped up to end the appeasement and end Saddam's threat to the region.

I dont think you guys understand the nature of war. This isn't about just Saddam. It's about the Republican Guard, Weapons Factories, other key military figures, and the old regime. You can't just kill one man and expect things to change.

Nick- the USA is using cruise missles due to the extreme accuracy. This is an attempt to minimize the impact on the civilians. I know you're going to come at me with some comment about how an invading army is going to impact civilians. Try and understand that this is for the greater good.

And they didn't drop 3000 bombs. You are hearing what the assumed plan was. 3000 bombs and missles in 48 hours was the estimated battle plan, based on what happened in the first war.

They dropped a few bombs and somewhere around 40 missles. They all weren't targeted at command figures. It seems to me they probably wanted to take out as much ability to use chemical weapons as possible. Probably, they launched a few laser guided bombs from the Stealth at Saddam and other high ranking regime members.

Anyways, all this is speculation right now. Better details will come out in the next couple of days.

They are not only going after the mad man himself but also the military zones that may contain biochemical and nuc's. They are basically making them become a peaceful nation. The funny thing is tht the people in countries aroudn Iraq have been expressing how much safer they feal with the US troops stationed there. Sad that they live in fear.
