How should I weight 02 Moomba Mobius for 70-80' rope length?

I need wake back to 70-80' feet. Is there a way to weight the Mobius so I can get decent weight back that far, and if so, how much weight and if it matters how should the weight be distributed?

Hey. I have a Mobius and we ride at 75' and could probably go back another 10'. I have the stock rear ballast full, a 700 lb sack in the rear locker, and a 350 lb sack in the front ski locker. That wake is very good, not huge like a SAN or X-star would be but its very nice. More weight in the back means more vert wake. More weight in the front means a more rampy wake. I've always heard a 1:3 front to back ratio is best.

I am considering an 03. Do you find them roomy enough, and do you think the freewals are a little low? What are your thoughts? It's either this, which I can afford, or a Tige' 21i, which I can afford less easily, but I don't know if it's worth the extra money.

yeah. I have the direct drive. I would definitely go for one. Mine is Very roomy. I don't see why a person would need anymore space. The free walls aren't too low in my opinion. They are just right. go for the moomba. They are great boats for the money. let me know if you have any more ?s.

Did you look at the LSV? Those free walls were WAY low, almost to the point of tripping over them. I'm going to check them out again this weekend. Got any pictures of yours? What do you have in it?

Thanks mucho for the input. A couple of follow-up questions: is your boat a direct drive? I have the V-drive. How much weight is in your stock rear ballast system? With a V-drive would I split the 750# rear sack into two and put one in each side locker? 3:1 ratio, that would mean for every 100# up front I'd put 300# in the back half, evenly spread out, etc, right?

I like my LSV. Decent value for the money. I have to trailer the boat quite a bit because we have VERY limited riding opportunities in San Diego. Bolts and nuts tend to rattle loose as a result so I need to stay on that. The boat looks sweet and since I can't ride more than once or twice a week it's good value for the money. My 02 LSV was 30K out the door (no stereo or internal ballast) but did have a tandem axle trailer, a heater and a tonneau and storage cover. Island Marine in Corona gave me a pretty good deal.

Yes. My mobius is a direct drive. since yours is a v, it will be different. Some people put a 350 lb. sack on either side of the motor. That will produce a nice wake along with a 300 lb. sack in the bow storage. If you want a really nice wake, people have put 550 lb. sacks on each side of the engine with a 600 lb. bag up front. In my opinion you should do fine with the lesser weight plus better gas milage. I guess it just depends on what size wake you are wanting. just remember, bigger isn't always better. Sounds like you got a great deal on your boat. Congrats.

Did you do anything to support the floor of the rear trunk? My season is about to start up, and I have to design a ballast system soon. I have seen all the postings on this rear trunk topic...I am just wondering if you've been using it for along time without problems?

I was thinking I would use a 600 sac in the locker and a 400 pound in the trunk...if that isn't enough two side sacs along the engine.

Weight it heavily towards the middle to optimize that area of line length. Equally distribute the rest in the front and rear.

Yeah, I put a 56" long 2 x 8 cut to fit, treated board in the rear trunk. I treated it again to make sure. Its holding the weight very well and showing no signs of flex. I've customized my ballast system to fill the rear trunk sack from the stock ballast line. I basically tee'd off the intake hose, put two ball valves on hoses leading to each sack. Did the same with the emptying tubes. I don't have any pics right now but I hope to get some soon. Here's a little draing i put together of what i've done. Maybe it will explain it a little better. I used 1" ID clear tubing, 1/2" pvc tees, 1/2" ball valves, some male and female adaptors, and tons of clamps.

Jon: you ever thought of writing an article for Wakeboarder Magazine on this stuff? I'm sure other people are like me and know that ballast and how its distributed effects rope length and, as a result, air time and ride quality, but aren't quite sure how to put 1 and 1 together.

i used to have an '01 mobius & heres how i weighted it: two 500lbs fat sacs on each side of the motorbox w/ rear ballast full (@ least), then, if not a lot of ppl were with me i'd throw another 500 size in the locker & fill it 2 about 350 or 400 or so....
