i am a advid snowboarder, and love taking pictures and videos. I have a digital camera, but its nothing to extreme. I am looking to get a new one, but really dont know much about them. I would use it mostly for snowboarding and some wakeboarding. What would be the best camera to get? I have a digital camera printer, so i just need a better camera. Any advice will be gladly taken!

Also with all of the new technology out it seems like anyone can take a good picture. I love photography and would like to do something with it, but i just feel like it seems anyone can take a good picture these days. To be a photographer i wouldnt know where to began. Any ideas?

thanks

What would be the best camera to get? A Nikon D2X. Unfortunately it's probably a little beyond your price range (its about $5200), and a little hard to use for the average joe. Unless you have worked with anything other than a point and shoot camera, it wouldn't be worth it. Give a price range that you are looking for and that will help us find the right camera for you.

As far as getting started in photography, I encourage everyone to start with an old, fully manual film camera. You can buy these used for pretty cheap and they are unforgiving. It allows you to learn about focus, shutter speed, aperture, and everything else you need to know.

Although it seems like anyone can take a good picture, you must develop a photographer's eye to take a photo that will stand out. This comes from taking a LOT of pictures. Try taking different angles of the same thing, work with different shutter speeds and apertures to see how they affect the picture, and learn how your camera works by trying new things. This will help you see things from a photographer's standpoint instead of just capturing exactly what is seen.

The advancement of digital processing (photoshop, etc) has also made it easy to make a photo look good. Although I do use these programs to enhance my images, you want everything to be taken correctly in the camera. Knowing your camera and knowing how to take a picture is important and you shouldn't rely on post-processing to make your image a good one. I shoot mostly digital now (because of cost and the ability to take a lot of pictures), but I strive to take the picture correctly so there is a minimal amount of photoshop work to do.

hey thanks for the advice, i have one of those old manual cameras like you are talking about, i will give that a try. i am not really trying to spend more than 500 dollars on a camera, i am into photography but like you said, it might be pointless at my stage. I mean i am a student, going to college still, living in an apartment trying to move to utah. So, money does get tight. Thanks, and if you have any advice for cameras in 500 to less area, let me know

i will take a look at the camera, thanks. I like those wakeboarding pics, are you in any of them, or are you just taking the pictures. The first one is sweet, where he is carving out to the side.

thanks

There are a few of me in there. most of those pics were taken with the 5700.
I've just upgraded to a Drebel but still need to buy a lens for it.

MattyBoyR6,

Got the Canon EF 70/200 2.8 IS USM for Christmas, it's a pretty awesome lens. A bit on the heavy side. Haven't had time to go out and start playing with it yet, but can't wait.

Pretty amazing camera, I've been blown away by the images I've seen posted from it. When shrunk down for web viewing they take on almost a 3D look. Very hard on the glass though when viewed at 100% pixels. Along with $8K for the body you're gonna need all L primes to go with it!
