I keep getting this message with my Windows (XP) update. I have restarted the computer several times but the message keeps appearing. What have I done wrong?

Not knowing what patch level you went to, I'd try disconnecting from the net and then restarting. Perhaps automatic network connections are preventing the patch from completely applying.

Try just shutting the computer down completely. An update I got recently I had to shut the comuter down, not restart it.

Thanks for the sugggestions. Unfortunately neither worked. This is a computer my children (Teenagers) use and had gotten loaded with spam, worms, viruses and all sorts of uninvited guests. Adaware, Spybot and Norton took care of most of the problems. I was updating to SP2. Originally could not update due to the same error message, downloaded SP with Netscape, and the update appeared to load, but now I have an Icon on the toolbar indicating my computer needs to restart to complete the update.

You may be screwed my friend. You can probably use it and no "more" damage will be done.

Best thing to do is back up your stuff and reload the O.S..

Then bring your stuff back. May be something stuck in the registry, unless you're an effin' wizard, that kind of thing will never be solved.

Have you tried Microsoft web site help?
