i'm looking at getting a good tripod for my Cannon GL-2. Other than height of tripod, most tripods seem to be equal. Can anyone make some recommendations for me? i'm looking to spend $200-$400.

Check out the Bogen (in the USA)/Manfrotto(in Europe) Tripods. Brand new they will cost you an arm and a legs, but I found some good deals on eBay for you to check out;

I personally run the Bogen 3046 legs with the 501 Pro Video Head (Quick Release). Keep in mind that with a setup like this it will be a heavier than the $29.95 tripod you find at circuit city.

I have the following legs Bogen Manfrotto Tripod 3046, but the head is useless for video. In this case I would toss it and buy a Bogen 3130 Video Head or similar.

OTHER COMBOS:
Bogen Manfrotto 3046 Pro Video Legs with a 3063 Pro Photo / Video Head

Total Old School: BOGEN 3046 TRIPOD + HEAD & QUICK RELEASE

BOGEN 3001N w/700RC2 MINI VIDEO HEAD/NEW BRAND

I have never bought one so I don't know brand names, but I have worked with many nice tripods at work. You will definately want a quick release, and the best kind have a slide mount. This allows you to adjust how far forward or back you set the camera so it is balanced. You will also want a fluid head for smooth pan and tilt.

Spend the $ on the head which is critical for smooth operation with video. My advice would be to find the best local camera store you can and go check them all out.

I second the Bogen / Manfrotto - it'll last you the rest of your life.
