Bought my first boat...and have a question

My wife and I just bought a 2004 Tige 21I Riders Ed. We will mostly use it for boarding but want to do a little surfing and skiing behind it as well.

Does anyone know how much and how to weight this thing for boarding?

Also, I have not done that much research about tige and was wondering about the quality and craftsmanship.

Any help would be appreciated.

Tige are solid boats. Very good construction.

Good point Hundo, but it was a kind of spur of the moment thing. Anyone know how to weight this boat to throw a nice wake. It has TAPS but I am not sure if it will be enough.

You should search. There have been many topics posted on TAPS, Tige quality, etc. In short, no they do not have a stellar reputation for build quality and yes you need about 1200-1500 lbs of ballast. Disregard TAPS for purposes of this discussion; if you are looking for a world-class wake, you'll need to weight your boat.

Erik Jernberg, actually the build quality is high. Fit and finish is superior to most. I never had problems with my Tige.

Use taps to adjust the wake. Add about 1500 for a decent wake.

I have no doubt that many Tige owners are quite happy with their boat. I am glad that yours has not given you much trouble.

I think tige fit and finish is equal to Correct Craft, Mastercraft, Malibu, and Sanger.

So better than Supra, Moomba, and Centurion.

The interior is plush and well laid out. As for the make... Wood vs. Synthetic stringers doesn't fly with me. We've had those arguments and no one makes a good case either way.

I'd agree that they're on par with Malibu (I have no experience with Sanger, and am I Mastercraft & Correct Craft fanboy so I can't budge there really...)

I would personally lay Tige and Supra on a par for what its worth.

I think when having this type of discussion you have to disregard the older boats as just about all the major brands have made huge changes to their line up post 1999/2000.

I've ridden behind the 21i, it's actually got a sick wake!! If you add at least 1,000 pounds it will be great! As for Tige quality, I have to say it's top notch. Spent a week on one at Powell, very impressed.

Seems to be a little disagreement here. I opted to get the 5 year engine warranty on the 5.7L TPI motor so maybe that will put me at ease on the quality issues.

As for the wake, is there any boat out on the market for around $35K that you don't have to weight to get a killer wake? I looked at the Moomba Mobius but seems like a lot of people have bad things to say about Moomba. Just trying to gage if I spent my money wisely and got a good boat. Again, I am a first time buyer.

Ponyh8r, You definitely got a good boat, no one is saying it's bad, just that out of their own personal preference that they like a different brand better. Tige really stepped up their quality after 2002-2003. My Family's first inboard was a Tige and we haven't had one quality problem with it yet. The reason people are saying the wake is good, but even sicker with the extra 1000 lbs. is because normally any 21 ft. Direct Drive is going to need that amount of ballast to throw a good wake. Once again, congrats on your purchase, you Should love you Tige.

Thanks David,

I have never rode behind a direct drive. I only learned to wakeboard this past summer and I mainly rode behind my friends Glastron I/O. It actually has an O.K. wake to many people's surprise. He has a nice tower and weights it pretty good.

I didn't get a chance to ride behind my boat before I put it away so I am really looking forward to next summer.

You should go out with some folks that have inboard experience. It's a completely different type of driving experience that you will pick up on quickly. It's reassuring to ride with folks with more experience. AS for the best way to weight the beast, I'll share my method. It involved 4 side sacs at 350 lbs each. One in the back with the seat in the up position(or the locker if not in use), the others were on either side of the engine box and the last in the walkway. That and the Taps and you are money.
